Looking For New Skates

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I'm looking to buy some new skates. Right now I'm wearing Vapor XXXX and when I first bought them they felt great but recently I've been having major fit issues. My foot hasn't grown or at least not that much, I think it might have something to do with the shape of my foot changing. The skate feels very tight in the forefoot and cuts off circulation to the outside toes. My main problem has to do with the fit around my ankle. Every time I skate I have terrible pain right around where the protruding bones on the inside my ankles are. I've noticed that the indent in the padding in that area is much father forward than it should be.

I was wondering if you anyone knew of which skates could hopefully fix the ankle pain and that has a wider forefoot. I just want a little more info before I go into the shop and start trying on skates.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Michael

The supreme line has a wider forefoot - but also a narrow heel (perfect for me); however, with your current skates you can get the heel punched out; just make sure the fitter knows what he's doing.

Not sure if you'll have the same experience as I did, but my old one90s killed my inside ankle bones. Went to my LHS to try on the vapor x60s, CCM Crazy Lights and RBK 11ks; the 11ks were the only pair that were pain free for me. Had my first game in them today, non-baked and I got 0 blisters/pain/issues. Would recommend trying a variety of boots before buying to see what works for you, but for me the 11ks were money!

Don't rule anything out before you try them on.

I'm currently looking for new skates. I have tried several and have narrowed it down to a few. They all feel comfortable enough but some not as snug as I think they should feel. I am constantly being told that once they are baked it will snug them up. Should I go for what feels best prior to being baked and assume baking will just make them better? I have heard that the CCM CL's feel like crap UNTIL you bake them. How much does baking really improve fit and comfort or is it just to speed the break-in period? (which I have also been told).

The two things I highlighted:

a) Yes, absolutely.

b) As I've seen on this forum countless times, baking a poorly fitting skate won't make it fit any better.

I agree with the previous poster. The skate should fit you fairly comfortably before you bake them. You should only have minor issues with them, maybe a small pressure point but nothing in the way of a major pain problem. I'm old school and very rarely have baked my new pairs of skates. I try several different brands until I find what fits and feels the best. Rarely do I need to do anything after I've worn them for a half dozen games or so but there has been the odd exception where I needed to bake them but only for a very minor discomfort problem. I've always felt breaking them in slower is a better process even if there is a small bit of pain involved. In the longer run I feel the skate moulds better to my foot shape.

From my own experience with CCM CL U+ , only after baking my feet found right fit and felt much more comfortable. It seemed to me that this CCM's model has to be baked unlike others.

On the other hand, after successfully made baking any issue may appear in some unexpected areas. My previous skates were X50's and went aroung 3 monthes as some rivet pressure come in beneath big toe ball.
