Skate sharpening 5/16th's too deep?

Recommended Posts

I am a 6'0 200 lb hockey player who gets 5/16th's on my skate sharpening. The LH guys go 'woah' when they hear the number. I love the feel and the grip I get with cornering; but are they way too deep? Any recommendations?

I heard that some LHS' won't go deeper than a certain hollow, for safety reasons. I guess you're lucky that they'll do that for you (or not?)

try FBV 100/1. Bite like you like but not all that drag of a 5/16.

Unless you're skating on ice that's as hard as concrete, I'm surprised that you haven't broken your ankle yet.

I won't go deeper than 3/8" unless I know you, and you've been skating on 3/8" for a while.

at my LHS the default, or standard, they use is 5/16. I'm a much smaller player and I love the 5/16.

That is an awful lot of bite...I go from 90/75 to 90/50 from Winter to summer. Like Chadd said...your ice must be as hard as granite for that deep of a hollow.

I've never really been on anything besides 1/2, and I somehow accidentally got a 5/16 a couple months ago.

Almost broke my neck stopping in front of the box to put my sticks down.

I highly doubt their normal cut is 5/16. 7/16 would make more sense, and even that is only two steps down from 5/16.

I use 7/16 for goalie and it isn't too much different than 1/2" which i use for player. My skate sharpener tells most people that moving from 1/2 to 7/16 or 9/16 is a waste as most people would never even notice the difference.
