Am I having an Issue with my holder?

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased a pair of EQ3's and I love the way they fit etc. The problem I'm having is when I do a crossover (forwards) or try to get a quick jump or a power stride in, my boot seems to hit the ice causing balance issues along with some awkward falls. Every time it happens, it seems to be more towards the toe.

All my previous skates were CCM's that had either tuuks, prolite 3's or epro's on them. Is it an adjusting issue or is there a completly diffrent issue with the holder?

The holder? Assuming it's intact and not loose, I think it's more of your skating style than the holder...

you're right with my skating style, very diffrent from the normal skater (Jason Allison had a similar stride). if it was my skating style though, wouldn't it have effected me sooner with previous holders?

Everything reguarding the holder's integrity is good. aligned and firmly attached.

No idea if this would be the case, I could be 100% wrong here, but maybe your new holders/steel are a bit shorter? Sounds like you do a lot of high angle toe starts/toe pushes, and now sometimes your boot his hitting on these pushes, a shorter holder would mean it would be more under than in front of the toe, so you'd "bottom out" at less of an angle when digging in with your toe.

Sounds more like an ankle issue with the EQ3s allowing your ankle to break down more than whatever you wore in the past. I can't see any other reason, especially as you have new steel in the new skates and that should more than make up for any difference in tower height on your skates. The only other potential issue I could see is if you had them "profiled" and the toe was shaved down too much.

It never seemed that it was a boot issue, in fact, these are tons stiffer than the U+ 07's I was wearing.

But after reading Ponder's post, he is correct. My CCM's had a 280mm runner while these have a 272mm runner. Never thought that 8mm would make such a big diffrence.

Now my next question, which holder can I have installed that will cause minimal drilling invloved? I've heard of the Custom + option but that would put me in the same boat.

No drilling would be C+; good luck finding them. They're rapidly becoming extinct.

LS2 would work as well, with expansion of holes, you could put your 272s on and slap on LS2.1 steel to replicate your previous feel. The previous skates were too big.

Or, you can just get used to it. You'll learn your limitations.

just a quick update:

Had LS2's installed and got to use them today during stick time. big diffrence! It felt even more comfortable skating compared to my previous skates. my stride seems to be a ton smoother both forwards and backwards.

only issue I had was a rivet pop out, but it looks like the prongs on the inside might've been missing. I had a heavy stride which could've also contributed to it.

That should never happen regardless of how much you weigh. Not very good work by whoever put them on.

Then...they never pressed it. Rivets don't just fall out.

Hope the rest of the job is ok.
