Modding a Bauer one100/ One95 skate boot

Recommended Posts

So one game into skating barefoot, I noticed that by the third period the upper seam on the Bauer100 skate is cutting into the area above my ankle.

A pair of socks would prevent the cutting but would mess with the fit.. I was wondering if someone did something like the TotalOne boot that had padding to prevent cuts from the boot.

I used a bungaPad tonight but that is made for applying to a particular spot. I am thinking of just getting a pair of Neoprene sleeves worn in that area would help. any thoughts?

Buy the bauer vapor sock? It's really really thin.

Another good sock is the under armour long sock. Super thin and work as a compression as well.

I guess I'll nominate the easton sock. I've only worn it a couple times, but I love it! Used to use the under armour sock and that is just as good

Why not cut a pair of old socks just below the ankle and just wear it? Doesnt affect the fit of the skates, and you still skate barefoot.

The only issue i have with socks is that they do just that.. compress my foot So When I gear up, my socked foot fits differently. After I warm up the socked foot fits differently, etc. For me, going the sock-less, the foot conforms to the boot when i lace up initially or that's how it seems right now. At least with the sock it offers the protection I want in the area.

I am considering that.. I do have enough Holey socks to do something like that right now I suppose.

i glued some minicell foam ala t1/apx style and from advice from another person here changed my laces and it seemed to work great. Then i bought S17s lol but i seem to rub near the top eyelet (i leave that one untied).

Glue some mini-cell foam and clamp it down with binder clips all along. This should keep the foam uniformly stuck to the top of your skate. You do a nice trim job and it'll probably look stock, Goon. I'm thinking a contact cement style adhesive?

You can try spot heating that part of the boot with a heat gun and when it's warm enough you can mold it with your hands so that it flares out away from your ankles. I did it with both my kors.

what about thin dress socks?

I feel like if the socks is thin enough for him, its not going to protect him from the boot edge. I think your best bet is to sew on a protective binding around the edge, perhaps the microcell foam suggested above. The only issue might be finding something that is waterproof (although not necessary). A cobbler should be able to do it for you, or if you want to DIY, I'll give this another plug: http://www.speedystitcher.com. Should be very easy to sew the material on with this yourself.

For the record, I have worn ultra thin socks before and I have had no issues with the boot seam rubbing on the leg. to me i feel the sockless foot route has a different feel on the ice right now. I am going to assume spandax and the like would also offer enough protection in that the boot seam is not in direct contact with skin.

I went the cheap route and cut up a pair of socks to protect my legs. I had no issues last night. Tonight will be the second time I will be wearing "the cuffs". The one thing I did notice while taking the skates off, there was sort of a suction sound when I initially pulled them off.. Probably due to the moisture in the boot coming into contact with the clarino liner.

I think the route of bringing the skates to a cobbler might be a good option. I am not too keen on gluing a piece because I think it will rub off (That's what she said). IMO having someone sew something on might be the better option so i see this problem reoccur

Thanks all for you inputs! Much appreciated!
