Might Need New Gloves

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I jammed my middle finger a couple weeks ago, and luckily I got a weekend off to let it heal. Still a bit sore to clench my fist, but far better than it was. I ended up playing again and jammed it again trying to keep a puck in on the boards.

I got home and put my gloves back on and noticed something... I know my gloves are too big (14"... my fingers are a good half inch to an inch away from the gussets), and I noticed that when I push my finger back (like it's being hyper-extended) it hurts, but if I shove my hand all the way in and try again it's no problem. Do you guys think having gloves that are too large are contributing to my finger injuries, or do you think it was just a fluke? I'd rather avoid buying gloves until the fall season, but I'd like to hear comments from the gallery...

It would appear that fit is the issue here. The finger breaks were placed there for the reason that your fingers flex in that area. If the glove is too big then the alignment would be off.

That actually makes a lot of sense. I'm driving up by my "LHS" (1.5 hours away) this Friday, so I'll stop in there on my way home and try to find something I like. Thanks!!

I think I may go with the Easton EQ30/50 or the new Bauer 4-rolls. I assume plenty have used the new 2011 Bauers, but has anyone out there tried the EQ30 or EQ50 also and could give me a bit of a comparison?

I have been using the EQ50 Elites for a couple of months and they are extremely comfy with excellent mobility. I'm loving these gloves. They felt a bit snugger on my hand than the Bauers when I was shopping but not uncomfortable. I can say that there was an issue with one of my fingers rubbing at the tip in the Bauers and NOT with the EQ50's which was the deciding factor. Keep in mind that is my hand and fingers but I am loving the Easton's.

The EQ series are built with a 4-Roll concept in mind, but fit snugger, more similar to your Bauer Vapor tapered fit than a 'traditional' 4-Roll fit.

Well then, after hearing both of your opinions, I'm definitely leaning towards the EQs. I just got EQ30 pants and absolutely love them. I like the idea of the snugger fit. Obviously I still need to try them on and all.

I kinda like the EQ30 better than the EQ50, just because of the white outlines, but again it will be fit that makes that decision also. (And a fit that will have to justify the $40 price difference).

Thanks again guys for the suggestions!

IMO you should go in with an open mind, no point in "leaning towards" or sort of mentally committing to anything before you try them on, gloves are all about fit. Try on all the gloves in your price range and see what fits best, especially since the problem you're trying to correct in the first place is poorly fitting gloves.

I'd say go for some size 13 gloves, you can still sell the X:40s for sure and end up breaking not close to even but enough to justify the cost.

I would definitely go with Bauer 4-Roll, only because of the traditional fit, can't ever go wrong with that.

I tried on several of my personal gloves: (CP94s, CP96s, XXXX, X:60, Vapor XVI, CCM 4-Roll) and couldn't really find one that offered the same protection with pulling back a finger the best.

I suggest trying to tape your finger(s) and add another protective layer on the finger itself.

So I went in... I didn't like the EQ30 but loved the EQ50. Unfortunately the EQ50s were too expensive for me right now so I had to look at other options. Despite liking a more cut fit, I ended up going with some Bauer 4-roll "elite" (somehow elite = cheap, in this case?). They are super comfortable! I couldn't tell you what type of palm they have, since I really don't know the differences between materials. Looking forward to using them on Sunday!
