Issues with skate fitting.....

Recommended Posts

I'm wearing the correct size and width skate, but about 2 months ago my feet started giving me trouble. I feel like I'm standing with all my weight centered on my sesamoid bones under the joint of my big toe and foot bones.

My girlfriend gave me a gift cert. for my birthday I'm going to use to get some new skates, and Bauer apparently does a custom program.

what changes would I want to ask for in order to avoid this problem with the new pair?

also if anyone has a link to an EDU on skate fitting or the contact info for someone who is a skate fitting Guru it would be greatly appreciated.

Agreed, a problem as you state sounds like something an insole or a doctor would better fix than skates. Custom skates will have pretty much the same bottom/insole as retail and could possibly not fix the problem.

Take your gift certificate to the podiatrist.

are you saying I need an orthotic or just trying to be a smart ass?

part of the custom process is a custom footbed isnt it? isnt that why they have you take a footprint in that molding foam?

A custom skate fitter is not a doctor. I don't think recommending professional help for a foot problem is being a smart ass, and am surprised you would think that.

There might be some helpful info in this thread.

Nope, to my best knowledge a custom skate does nothing for the bottom of your foot, they come with the same piece of foam insole that provides little support. A custom skate will provide custom lengths for each foot, stiffness, eyelet strength, depth, etc but not your foot. The SIDAS footbed is custom but still made of a flimsy foam that will not support your weight anyway. A podiatrist will tell you what is causing your pain and how to fix it. If you need custom insoles, you will get something made of graphite or plastic like mine that will fix the problem. After that, you can get the skates made around your insoles and be set or fit them into your existing skates.

No, I wasn't being a smart ass. I did a custom skate fitting for Nicksmission here with X:60 skates built around the custom orthotics he had made by his podiatrist. So perhaps, just custom orthotics will solve your problem. The reason I say this is that Bauer may have already stopped making custom Vapor X:60s in St. Jerome. The Vapor APX and Supreme TotalONE may be more skate than you need(I don't know your level of play, how often you skate a week, how long you have been skating, etc.). Then the price tag on either of those two models in a custom boot is over $950 (with NJ sales tax) in my shop. Hopefully, the podiatrist can solve your foot problems. Keep us informed down the road....

Played for the last 18 years including prep school, college club and a brief stint in the USJUVHL with the Anaheim Wild Cats. I'm not a pro and there are plenty of guys on here who are probably better than I am, but I at least know what I'm doing.

Play 3-4 nights a week, 2 sometimes 3 games per night (we're short on skaters here in vegas, i get to fill in as much as my body will allow)

I'm aware of the price for the customs, and I'm lucky enough to have an income and career to afford me the luxury of a skate with that kind of price tag. at 6'4" 255 I put a lot of pressure on my feet and I'll pay what I have to in order to get skates that wont leave me hobbled after a long night.

I've scheduled an appointment with the Podiatrist for next week, is there a certain type or style of orthotic I should be asking for?

I highly recommend going to the podiatrist and getting the custom skates.

I had my orthotics done by my local podiatrist, the lab built them specifically for hockey skates.

Between the custom skates I had fitted by DarkStar50 and the orthotics they saved my hockey career, and I feel better than ever on the ice.

is this a particular type of orthotic? should I ask the Dr. for a certain brand or laboratory? this isnt exactly a hockey town, I'm not sure they know that off hand....

If they made custom footbeds for customs, I wouldn't be getting superfeet black since the bauer footbed just plain sucks. Good Luck with everything and keep us informed!

He may not need custom skates...

George, take your skates with you to the podiatrist. He will make the orthotics to fit inside the skate.

It's my understanding that most of the orthotic labs in the US/Canada have experience with Hockey skates. Ask the Doctor if his lab offers a Orthotic designed for hockey skates.

They build them in such a way to avoid taking up a ton of volume (they still take up a lot of volume in most cases pending on how much correction you may need)they also build the orthotic so you don't have a big heel lift like some regular orthotics.

JR is right you may not need customs. In my case, I did because I had a lot of correction in the left foot.

As a skate fitting guru, I second DS's opinion. Take care of the foot first, then go from there.

I don't even rank with these guys and recommend seeing a doctor first.. Custom skates are for odd fitting feet and a desire to have features built into the boot. The doctor should help you with your pain relief

I'll follow. Doctor for bone issues and orthodics, then build a custom skate too. If you have the income, look at it as an investment. Be sure your fitter is experienced, be sure you have the time to wait, and be sure you want to part with the added expense. If you can agree, go for it.

Once again, we do not know what his foot issue is other than the fact he is getting pain on the bottom of his feet.

Therefore, there is absolutely zero reason to recommend custom skates.

This reasoning that a few of you are using in this thread is the exact reason why I reject more custom fittings than I accept.

do you only suggest custom skates for people who have two different sized feet or some other kind of physical characteristic that makes their feet odly shaped?

There's a difference in ordering custom skates and custom skate fittings. Custom skates could very well be retail sizing with added stiffness, and reinforced eye-lets. The custom fittings that JR is talking about is a complete sizing of both feet. The reasons you listed normally need to be seen in extremes to warrant the fittings. Most people can fit into retail skates if they just find the pair that fits their feet.

The heels are shaved on mine to correct pressure points on my heels, some people get them up front, they can compensate for that too.

You can see I have a heavy block on the left foot for pronation.

You yourself said your skates fit fine, other than the pain in your feet.

The difference in before and after for Nick was amazing. His previous skates were impossible to even walk in! The orthotics were the first step in correcting his foot and skate problems.

Not to derail but, I had to go custom because of my heavyness and the fact that no boot on the market had the correct depth for my foot. I pretty much had to go customs correct JR?

Like your saying though, skates fit great but foot pain, go see your ortho doctor. Hopefully you can get it sorted and enjoy your skates again.
