Punching out Skates

Recommended Posts

I skated in my X60s for the first time this season and all of a sudden they feel like they are way to thin for my feet and make the outside hurt really bad. Last season I could tell that they werent quite wide enough but it wasn't very noticable. My Question is how effective is getting them punched out? Could it turn a regular fit to say an E or even EE fit? or is it more for slight tweaking in fit. Also curious to find out how much it usually costs for this type of procedure

I can't say what it costs, since I do it myself; but in my experience, punching out is good at spot relief, like if you have a pointy spot on your foot somewhere, but not so good at changing overall width. You may just need a wider skate, unless it is one specific spot that is too tight. Punching out doesn't make more material, it just moves it around some. So if the skate doesn't have enough volume to begin with, I doubt punching would help.

My local shops did it free with a sharpening. It's very effective in widening the skate. It did make a pair of D's into closer like E's but only where I needed it.

I punched my X60's after doing the same thing you did and wore flip flops around for a while during my "The Dude" unemployment period (which I'm still in) and it worked like a charm. My LHS didn't charge for it but it worked to get my boot comfortable again.

Sorry to bring back an old thread:

I picked up a pair of CCM U+ CLs (5.0 D) a couple weeks ago. The skates perform great, the toebox and heel fit perfectly, but I have hobbit feet that are really wide in the middle and for the first hour I'm on the ice with them the pain can get pretty bad on the sides of the skates. Does anyone know of anywhere near Northern NJ that can do a good job fixing them?

Thanks!

Just curious, how do you do this?

I'm planning to post m own recently developed method that has worked well for my left ankle, where the U+ foam was starting to hurt bad.

Xuno, where are you in northern NJ? An MSHer by the name of Darkstar50 runs the pro shop at the Ice House in Hackensack. He's been a great help to me, and the shop is a great place to go to.

I'm in Sussex, just might make my way down there! I had no idea someone from MSH was that close, haha
