Ilegal vs legal hits?

Recommended Posts

Hits is one of the 3 things that drives the sport but if Scott Stevens made hits like in this video. Would any of them been considered illegal? I think its funny he ends up hitting a couple of his teammates in a couple of the picks.

I would say most certainly some of those hits would now be considered illegal. The Paul Kariya one, eg., Kariya's not even looking ahead as he's already made the pass.

There were two maybe three hits that would not be suspendable. A lot of his hits were headshots or to an unsuspecting player. The infamous Lindros hit, Stevens easily could've hit Lindros shoulder to shoulder, but decided to go for the head. The Kariya hit is just simply dirty.

He always seemed to come out of nowhere to hit an unsuspected player. A lot of these hits were on guys that were already going through two players or were already being checked by someone else and boom, here comes Stevens out of nowhere to deliver a bone crushing hit.

I looks like most of hits was checking the body where the principal point of contact was. I didnt seem like many of his hits was towards the heads of the opponents.

you serious? minus the first hit the hip check, every single hit in there was a hit to the head and almost every hit was also from the blindside. The hit on Kariya is a joke, what a low life.

At least 6 of them would be illegal, but a few are just big legal hits. Here is how I saw the hits:

10. Clean hip check - legal

9. Lined him up and hit him right in the chest. - legal

8. Blindside headshot - illegal

7. Comes across the ice from the blindside - illegal

6. Catches Willis in the chest as Willis is trying to cut across ice - legal

5. Headshot with the elbow/forearm - illegal

4. Stevens circles instead of coming from the blindside - he does catch Francis in the head, but I think that's a combination of Francis looking down and Stevens being taller. Hard to tell with the angle given.

3. Blindside hit for sure, but with the shoulder...ended up high due to Stevens size. - illegal

2. Late blindside headshot. This is the worst one. - illegal X3

1. Headshot, but not blindside and Lindros did have his head down. - illegal

Ok I will admit the hit on Lindros was towards the head. But he seems like he didnt injure any of his opponents they just got the wind knocked out of them.

Most of those guys ended up with concussions from those hits and that was when teams rarely diagnosed players with concussions.

At the very least, look again at the hit Stevens delivered on Francis, number 4, I believe. Does it look like he just had a wind knocked out of him? Francis could barely balance himself being on all fours! That's a knock-out in the boxing world and the effect such as this can only happen from a serious hit to the head.

A bit of a side-step, anyone watched the last night's game between the Wings and the Blackhawks? What a brutal hit to the head by Smith on Smith. I was surprised the guy was able to get up after that one...

That's covered in the suspension topic. And he wasn't really able to get up on his own, he needed help off the ice and into the locker room.

I wasn't off-topic, I don't believe. This was the latest example of the illegal, brutal hit...

The Tucker hit should have been a charge since his skates left the ice for the hit. The amazing thing is that the Flyers bench was able to reel Kapanen in and they scored on the continuation of the play to win the game.
