How to deal with dull Reebok skate blades?

Recommended Posts

I have a older pair of Reebok's that I bought used. Since having them, these skates have given me bad balance and stopping. Mostly the problem I have is stopping. I'm right handed and I can stop with them right foot in front, but when I try left foot front, there is no edge feeling. Even at slow speed, I cant get that edge in order to shift my weight. I have had the skates sharpened numerous times and still the same problem. So I'm wondering (if possible) the blade has become so dull that an edge cannot be cut into it, or if the guy sharpening doesn't know what the hell he is doing?

Here is a picture of my blade with a measuring tape. Measures about half an inch in the height of the blade.

It's either the guy sharpening your skates or something mental. Hold them upside down and put a quarter on the blade at various places along the blade to see if it is flat.

I had a pair of 5Ks that had the same problem I had to change the steel it was warped about midway down. Once I switched the steel I had no problem.

You are prob right on this one. Bent steel will not grab, even after a fresh sharpening. OP said he bought them used, many people who have defective mounted holders often unload them on the unsuspecting buyer. OP, put a ruler lengthwise on your blades, if you see light between the ruler and the blades, then that's your problem. If they ar enot bent, then it's likely a bad sharpener.

I bought them off ebay and overall the boot was in pretty beat up shape, not as described in the pictures. I should of paid better attention but no big deal. I'm going to try a different sharpening shop to see if it makes any difference. If not, convert these skates to roller hockey and buy new ice skates.

Try switching the steel on the skates. (left on right, right on left, all you need is a flathead screwdriver and a pair of pliers) If you have the same problem, then it's the steel.
