New Bauer Supreme One80's HURT

Recommended Posts

I bought a new pair of Bauer Supreme One80's about 2 weeks ago from the local hockey shop. I tried them on and they felt great. i had them baked and sharpened and waited 24 hours before skating. I took them out 2 days later ans skated for 2 hours and they felt great. I skated 3 days after and I couldn't skate because the pain on both of the inside of my ankles was so intense. I had pain on the bone below the inside of my ankles and caused a blister on one foot. I waited 4 days and tried again, but the pain was so bad that I couldn't skate let alone walk on them. I'm not sure what to do. I tried a thin foam pad over the sore areas with NO luck. I heard that it takes a while to break new skates in, but if I can't use them, how can I break them in. I have an old pair of Bauer Supreme 4000's that feel fine on my feet. I'm at a loss as to what to do next !!!

I just purchased the same skates a week ago. I went through the same thing. The first time out they were great, the second time, I got blisters and my ankles killed. Now the skates are great. For me the skates are so stiff it took my feet time to get used to. I came from 8090's and this skate is much stiffer. I found when you go out on the ice, do not skate hard right away. I tied them lose and after 20 minutes or so I tightened them up. This is the first skate I actually have to "warm up with them". The first time I ran onto the ice my feet killed....I have about 6 hours on them now and they are perfect. The store I purchased them from warned me that I may have ankle and blister problems because of how stiff they are.

Thanks Nat...The problem is that they hurt so bad I can't skate. I thought about having them rebaked. What do u think?

I feel your pain, the blister I got was bad, and I had to purchase ankle booties so I could skate in them. It sounds like you have bruised your feet and/or ankles. Unfortunately you will need your feet to heal. I am not sure how many times you can bake them. Are your ankles close to the eyelets? Are your ankles in the padding? Years ago I had a pair of Vapors that I found out the skate wasnt deep enough for me and I messed up an ankle.

Best thing to do, wear them while sitting in the couch and move your feet as much as you can. Best way to break in skates off the ice imo

This is a great idea, especially for this skate IMO.

Thanks guys....My ankles are in the padding, it seems that the bone below my ankles is pressed against the boot below the padding. I had my feet in them today with a pair of wet socks for about an hour. I was ok until I started moving my feet, then the pain started. I know, quit my bitching...lol. But I haven't ever had a pair of skates feel this way.

Your not bitching, skates can be a pain in the butt. Hope they work out for you. Best skate I have ever worn...very responsive.

I also read somewhere that some skate shops can punch out the area that causes pain. Have you ever heard of this?

Yes. My 8090's were punched out. I was told that it is OK to punch a skate out as long as you do not make the skate to big for your foot. The local shop I go to does not bake them, but uses a heat gun where he is going to punch them out.

Nat, I noticed that you use the One80's also. How long did it take you to break them in??

6 Hours and Superfeet Yellow insoles fixed both the rubbing and ankle Issues I had. The rubbing was below my ankle and the insoles lifted mt foot.

Let me better explain, I needed Superfeet insoles for my pronation Issue, The insoles solved several issues and once.

it took me 2 weeks (~6 skates or ~9 hours) to break in my one80's. the only boot that would fit my foot type better would of been the 735's but these were stiffer.

i find they are not very friendly with pressure points, and had to punch out each and every one.

Get them punched as a last resort. Though Superfeet solved my small blistering issue since they supported my midfoot/heel better, just sayin'

Thanks for all of the great advice guys. I'm gonna head to my LHS to see if they have the superfeet yellow. I'll keep you posted.

Best of luck! I wore mine two hours this morning with no issues. Superfeet, thin socks and an ankle booties on the left foot until the blister heals. Hopefully, with time you will be good to go.

Well I took the skates back to the LHS and had the left skate baked again. After the baking, the skate felt great, I took the skate home and pain again. The guy at the skate shop said that if I still had the issues he would contact his Bauer rep to see if there is anything that can be done. I'm almost to the point of putting them up for sale on ebay and trying a different manufacturer. This is so frustrating. He said that they might need to be broken in, but how can I break them in if I can't skate in them??

Sorry to year. Maybe try some of Lubo's suggestions and skip eyelets. I had ankle pain for the first hour and then it went away after I loosened them. I know they will fit better once you break them in. I guess, let your feet heal up and give it a go again. Do you have another pair of skates you can use? If you use your other skates, does your feet hurt in them now? I know years ago when I bruised my ankles from a pair skates, it took some time for them to heal.

Read my post and try it. You should be able to find them at any shoe repair place.

For $10 it's worth a shot.

Are they just heel supports? Something like Superfeet insoles? Where sis you buy them?

They are a small wedge that goes underneath your insoles. Brings your heel up slightly in the skate. I got them at a local shop here that repairs equipment and does skate fittings/customizations for quite a few NHL players.

@nat, I have an old pair of Bauer Supreme 4000's that don't hurt my feet at all. I'll give the ankle time to heal and see what happens.

Thanks everyone!!

I had the same problem as the OP with my one80's when they were new. The only solution that worked was shaving down the sides of the tongues to "feather" them out a bit. The new felt tongues are damn thick, and I find that they cut them straight, rather than feather them out. Now, they've been thinned out a bit as they get closer to the edges, on both sides of the tongue. They were creating pressure in the place the OP described.

Possible for you skate through the pain?

I know this sounds bad but I just got some inline RX60's which are very very stiff and they hurt real bad for about 4 weeks. Now they are great.

Most top end skates require a good break in period I have found. No pain no gain!

But if the pain is that bad I would just baking them again. I have heard of guys baking supremes 3-4 times.

I would, but I can't even walk in them let alone skate to break them in. They feel ok when I sit, but when I get up to stand that's when the pain starts. I don't know if it's the tongue because my supreme 4000's have the felt tongue also.
