Dyeing hockey gloves

Recommended Posts

any one tried black to navy? or would that even work?

I had a hard time covering it with black over blue. That's just one coat. I'll have to do a second to get some even results.

wow! look great! did you use the India ink?

Yeah, just like you suggested! I think it'll be great after a second coat. Thanks for the suggestions!

Where can i get india ink?

...Normally any "craft" type store. Michaels, Hobby Lobby, etc... or online. Just Google 'India Ink' and you're all set.

Just some additional info, maybe others can chime in. One coat for both gloves (14" bauer 4 rolls) took an entire bottle. You will probably need two to do the job properly. Under light, one coat will still look very dark navy. Mine were leafs blue before, something in between navy and royal.

Is there any issue with bleeding when doing the India ink? I'm thinking of picking up a pair of the AK27 pro's in red/navy and then dyeing the navy black, but there's those white lines that cross over the two colors on the back of the hand. I was wondering if it would be possible to leave the white lines, or will the ink bleed through the white...

hmmm....maybe. when I did mine I was dyeing the whole bottom part of the glove black so I didn't really have to worry about that. I didn't notice any bleeding when I was doing it but there no un-doing it once you start.

It could bleed a little, I would take shoeshine boy's suggestion and get a sharpie to do all the edges near the cuff. I'd also think that if it was sublimated graphics you might get more bleeding than if it was stitched on.

Any smell (shellac?) after using the India ink?

I had a bit of smell. Generally the ink that Shoeshine boy suggested I do not believe has that much shellac in it. There's a faint hint but nothing too bad. I'm sure anything in your bag would overpower it lol.

Yeah, I figure worse comes to worse I just do it all in black.

Yeah it's submilated, so I'll try the sharpie around all the white and hopefully keep the bleeding down.

what would you guys say works best for blacking out the white bauer logos on x60's?? most durable without fading or anything. thanks.

India Ink for sure. It's waterproof and very very black. You might need a couple of coats to completely black it out. One coat will probably make it look like a shiny gun metal, not a bad look either in my opinion.

Have you thought about removing it? I've heard a small bit of furniture stripper on a rag will get it to peel.

I THINK (correct me if I'm wrong) the logos on the X60s (pros and non pros) are stitched on. You could try a thread remover, but often times the fabric around lettered stitching is so stretched out already that it won't look too good after removal. I suggest blacking it out with some ink, personally.

not the best color match, sharpie was useless, magic marker bled like crazy, couldn't find india ink, elmer's painter worked the best. lettering and trim were orange prior to black out.

I was intrigued by this thread and decided to black out an old pair of Eagle gloves my brother abandoned. I went to Michaels, got some india ink and brushed on a couple coats. They turned out great, they looked terrific, and after letting them dry for a couple days, I tried them out in a game. And throughout the game, the ink was rubbing off on my white jersey and socks.

I picked up a pair of Providence College Bauer 4-rolls for $20 at a local used sports store, and I want to give dyeing mitts another shot. How do I avoid the ink from rubbing off?

I tried to do it with india ink on 2 pairs on gloves, both were rubbing off on the 1st time is used them. I let them dry 3 days, one pair was an easton the other a bauer. Never again will i try dyeing hockey equipement, for me it was a waste of time and money.
