cutting the bicep guards off of shoulder pads

Recommended Posts

Has anyone tried this? Up until a little while ago I was using these really old CCM shoulder pads that I have had since I was 12 years old (now 24). They started to feel a little restrictive as of late so I went and looked at some shoulder pads and tried some on. Seeing as I don't play in any completive checking situation I went with the Bauer Supreme Classics. I find that these tend to be a little restrictive and the bicep guard pushes down my elbow pads. The problem with me is I don't have a very big chest but I am 5'10" about 170LB so when purchasing I went with a size medium because that was what I should be minus the chest measurements.

I took mine off, my elbow pads come up pretty high and there is a gap left but I have yet to be hit there. Just be aware of the gap in protection when you play (ie Don't stand in front of slapshots, etc) and you should be ok

I cut the top off my elbow pads or wear my Jofa 8025 elbows that don't have a bicep guard. I would rather have the bicep guard be part of the shoulder pad than the elbow pad.

Yeah you won't need shoulders if you never fall or get bumped into the boards or anything, neither of those things happen frequently in hockey I don't think.

I play no-check hockey but feel like I need the shoulders in case of getting hit with pucks (I play defense). I hate wearing mine though because they are super bulky and a size or two too big. I feel like I'm wearing football pads. Maybe a padded shirt would be a good alternative? Or could I possibly remove the shoulder caps?

I recently took a pair of bauer supreme classics and attached the sternum and spine guards from a set of easton s2's. Really light weight and non-restrictive, plus I've got some plastic in there to protect from shots and cross checks. I love em.

thanks for the responses bicep guards are coming off today. And in response to Peteypop I appreciate your suggestion but troy has it right. I am a good skater have been playing most of my life, but some of the people I play with are not and they can't stop.

You might also just get a lacrosse liner/shoulder pad... they have some protection but, clearly, mobility wise, you won't get any better than that...

If there is no checking, you don't need shoulder pads.

If your worried about restriction, get one of those padded roller hockey shirts, or sherwood classics.

I wear shoulderpads because s*** happens and I'm not really interested in getting a separated shoulder from an awkward fall.

I play in a mens no check beer league. Last October while trying to keep the puck in the zone someone cut my legs out from behind and whiplashed my body backwards. My head and right shoulder blade were the first things to hit the ice. I was wearing some Bauer Pro Defender shoulders which have virtually no back protection. The impact of my shoulder caused the humerus to pop out of the socket and tear the rotator cuff. Wear shoulder pads, if I had been wearing the new Easton EQ50's I just bought, I wouldn't be having to wait until summer before I can play in games again.

Cracked my sternum in a collision first game this season, and I was wearing pads (old D&R with little chest protection). I'm not looking to upgrade or anything, but it was an eye opener. No check doesn't mean no contact.

Yea, I'm not so much worried about ME as I am the other idiots on the ice.

I don't wear the bicep/upper arm piece on my old NikeBauer chest protector. Took a nasty slapshot off the tricep (from my own damned player), then I just got cross-checked there about a week ago.

I don't like the feel of them, and I don't like how they push down on my elbow pads. I've only been "hurt" twice there, in five years, so, yeah. I'll deal, but I'll always wear shoulder pads. I like standing in front of the net and trying to tip shots. Wouldn't do it if I didn't have shoulders on.
