Best replacement for Jofa 8090 17" shin guards

Recommended Posts

I am in desperate need of a solution to my broken shin guards. I have had knee surgery (in 2000...right before I bought the 8090s) and really cannot afford another one if I want to convince the wife that hockey is still an option. My current 17" 8090s are almost too short for me (I am 6'4"+), so I really cannot go with anything shorter. In my random testing of other brands, I have not found a 17" that is as long as the Jofas, and so in most I guess I would need an 18". I would actually prefer to go with an 18" shin guard, even if I could magically find a pair of 8090s (or 9090s...even better!) somewhere.

Therein lies the major problem, because I cannot find anything out there in an 18" Jofa / RBK / Reebok shin guard that is either under $200 shipped from Europe (for a pair of new but like 20 year old 5090s!!!!) on eBay or anywhere else, and even the 17" ones I can find are RBK or Reebok, and I am not familiar enough with the current models to know if any are as good or better than my 8090s and if they run true to the same sizes.

Thus, I need some advise on where to find a pair of shin guards that is long enough (17" Jofa 8090 / 9090) or 18" anything else, and if any current shin guard replicates the durability, injury protection (most important), and length of the Jofas I have now. I am ready to buy this very second, and my budget is flexible (though obviously not $200). Ideally, I would LOVE to find an AHL / NHL team sale that had a pair of REAL Jofa 18" 8090 / 9090 equivalents for sale. I am hard on gear and love the durability of pro-stock stuff (skates, pants, elbows, and sticks are all Dallas Stars or St. Louis Blues pro-stock), so pro-stock would be the absolute ideal. I have seen some Jofa 6070 equivalents on eBay and other sites, but I really want a pair with the HyperX style knee joint, as that's the major injury prevention feature of the 8090s that has saved my knees in the past.

Thanks to anyone who can help me out. As you can tell, I'm a bit desparate for a solution, and I really hope someone has an idea on how to help me since my incessant searching of the Internet has failed to do so.

@Monty22 - Just checked again and the only 17+" shins on eBay (US site) were the 6070s and the above mentioned pair of 20 or so year old 5090s going for $199 (BIN w/ $49 shipping). The 6070s do not have the HyperX knee feature (which is a must), and since a friend of mine plays in those, I know that they are not what I want. Thanks.

It's going to be almost impossible to find actual Jofas in your size in the exact models you're looking for. Better off trying on the Reebok models and seeing if you like them. There's got to be a hockey store somewhat close to you, no?

There are several...D/FW surprisingly has a ton of hockey (and like 6-8 shops), and I work part-time at the rink my family plays at (driving the zam...) so I'm in and out of the Stars' Stuff store like twice a day. Unfortunately, most do not have any 17" 9K or 11Ks in stock to try on, so I am basing my sizing needs on a guess. I think I'm going to order from a place that has the 11Ks in stock and see if I like them...still concerned about the 17" size being short. If anyone has any better ideas, please let me know. Thanks!

I wore out a pair of 8090's and after looking at all the other options, I bought a pair of Reebok 11k's. They've also got the hyper-x which I wanted, and more protection than the 8090's. I'm very happy with them.

Thanks. Just ordred a pair of 11Ks from Inline Warehouse (only place with 17" that didn't charge shipping and had a useable discount code I could find). Used the commonly available iWin discount code (didn't even have to buy an iWin product) and got them at 10% off of the standard MAP price of $119.99. Really would have prefered to shop at Total Hockey like normal, but as stated at the top, I was pretty desparate. I'll come back here after I get them and use them (supposed to come Wednesday...hoping UPS arrives before I have to leave for my game!) and report back on the comparison to the 8090s for anyone else interested.

Hope the 11ks work out for u, I ordered a pair of 10ks from a year or so ago and found them to be to bulky, and they seem to have extended the plastic shin around the ankle area which made them uncomfortable as I put my pads over the toung of my skate, so ditched those and with some patience found rbk 8k pros( jofa 5090) 17" on eBay, for weeks the guy had a pair of 18, his eBay name is pro stock hockey I think, he still has rbk 7k pro( jofa 6070? No hyper x)u should look him up and see if he can get u the 8k pros if ur 11ks don't pan out. I think I paid 135$ for the pads, shipping cost me $$ as I live in Canada eh! Best of luck

I just searched all over eBay and didn't see him, but would be interested if you can dig up the auction emails and send me the actual eBay name so I can send him an email. I will definitely keep an open mind on some of the other options, but am hopeful the 11Ks work. I put my shins down over the tongues and my socks behind my ankle, so I am hoping the super hard boots on my One 95s make the problem you had become bonus ankle protection for me.

I get the 11Ks tomorrow and will skate in them Wednesday. I am also have a line on a pair of 18" that are going on a Canadian version of Craigslist and might end up on eBay soon. I also made contact with the guy who you sent me to on eBay and he's looking for 18" 8Ks so we'll see how that goes.

I just thought I would post a short update for anyone who finds this thread via searching. I did get the 11Ks and have used them for about 2-3 weeks. They are slightly lighter than my 8090s, and have similar protection. As nicker87 noted, they have a different ankle area than the 8090s, which I think is simply due to it being slightly narrower and slightly more curved. The plastic also seems to be suspended slightly farther out away from the leg than the 8090s, but then again, the 8090s have been heavily abused for 12 years+ so I'm not 100% they were different when new.

Overall, I would like to have an 18" version of these, but in the end, these were better than buying a lower-end version of the older pads in 18" off of eBay. I got dumped on a breakaway last week and got knee to goalpost contact and rolled right over and went out for the penalty shot, so that was pretty much all the evidence I needed they were the right choice.
