Shoulder pads twisting

Recommended Posts

I searched different ways but, oddly, found nothing on this.

My Bauer Classics are light and airy, and seem to offer adequate protection for rec league.

But I notice that no matter how I strap them, the caps end up twisting, and that in turn causes the bicep guards to twist a little. It's not a huge problem, but it is a distraction, in a sport that moves too fast for a loss of focus.

Does this happen to everyone? Or is it simply a problem with this model?

Has anyone with these pads had success using sock tape or some such to keep the caps in place? I'm not sure why they are designed to be so loose in the first place.

Thanks

p.

I have a pair of Bauer Supreme Classics, but I don't have the twisting issue with the shoulder caps. One way you could remedy this would be to put some velcro on the under side of the caps and some on the pad under the caps. Or you could use elastic in the same way, sew it onto the underside of the caps and then to the pad under the caps.

That was my first idea, but I don't know whether they make "sticky sided" velcro. The sewing box may have some elastic, and I am pretty good with a needle, but the result would probably be dicey. That's where the sock tape idea came from. Easy enough to try, and if it's ugly, no matter, it's under the jersey.

I've seen it for sale at hobby stores and such. I don't know how sticky the stuff is, but I'd think it wouldn't stick to the materials in the shoulder pads very well. For the modifications I've made to my shoulders (adding spine and sternum pads from old pads) I've just sewed the crap out the elastic and it has stayed put pretty well. A sewing awl might be a good investment as well, which would make the whole process quite easy.

Hey TeamHonda how right you were. I explained this problem to the wife tonight and voila, she went to her office and returned with two strips of self-adhesive velcro, one male, one female, left over from a Halloween costume she had made.

I put three strips under the caps, three more on the shoulder parts, and left them to "bond". But they don't adhere too well to the material. Still there is some grip. I play tomorrow night and will give this a try.

I stopped in at a lhs on the way home and checked out the CCM pads (since everyone on MSH seems to be discussing them lately) and yes, none of them have this flapping cap design. All the models restricted the movement of the caps one way or another. There was also a low-end Sherwood pair that made it even simpler: the cap and bicep guard were one piece.

Thinking there is a pair of CCM pads in my near future. A lot of sale items right now.

Take a hair dryer and go over the velcro for a minute or so. This will bond the glue right into the fabric. I do it all the time when I put extra velcro on my elbow pads and it works like a charm.

+1 on the CCMs. I just got a pair of last year's U+ 09 model and I can assure you that you will not have that problem.
