Sher-wood Smith Pattern

Recommended Posts

Is anyone familiar with the Sher-wood Smith pattern? It seems to be new. I'm wondering if it is recycled or if it is completely new the pattern db led me to thinking that it might be the same as the bredl/sundin/afinogenov. It's a fairly large mid or mid-toe in a 5 lie.

I noticed that pattern in the new Sherwood catalogue as well. It does say it's new in the catalogue. To me it looks like the old Warrior Smyth, but with a different toe shape (both have rounded toes, but the Sherwood looks like a complete circle and the Smyth has kind of a shaved/rockered area at the bottom part of the toe). The picture makes it look similar from above and both are classified as mid-toe curves (the Smyth is a Warrior 4 which is a 5 in most other companies...I mainly use Smyths, but have Christian #5 blades and a Bauer St. Louis/Foresberg pattern which are supposed to be 5 lies and the lies seem to be the same on all three of those patterns when I line them up).

It also looks somewhat close to the TPS Afinogenov - same lie, same toe shape, but I believe that was always classified as a pure mid-curves rather than a mid-toe curve.

I'd also be curious to know what the new Sherwood Smith looks like in person as looking at the curve in person and/or taking real pictures are obviously better than catalogue illustrations alone.

I have a lefty and a righty at my work. I'll snap a couple pics next time I'm in and post them up. If I recall correctly, the toe wasn't perfectly round on the Smith either. It looked a bit more like the tapered Gionta instead of the round Kopitar/Hall/P92. I lined the stick up with a lie 4 (5) Gionta and it seems to be a higher, but the blade definitely has more rocker than the Gionta.

Some pics would be greatly appreciated! I was wondering about this pattern since I first saw it in the catalog.

Some pics would be great. I'm a little disappointed that the lie is a bit higher than the Gionta (also have one of those courtesy of steelnation248) as I prefer low lie blades, but if it has more rocker than it might still work for me when my supply of Smyths runs thin and if I can't afford to get a Warrior custom with a Smyth at the time.

I'd also be curious to know if it's closed like the Smyth or more open at the toe like a Gionta or P92. I thought the Gionta was going to be pretty similar to the Smyth, but with the curve starting more toward the toe, however; the Gionta is also more open at the toe, whereas the Smyth is neutral/closed. For that reason, while I can still use the Gionta, I still prefer the Smyth pattern...probably because I grew up using mostly big closed mid hooks.

My buddy just snapped this shot of the Smith next to a Gionta. Not the best photo as the Gionta isn't really lined up properly, but you can see the differences. 2012_05_26_14_16_03.jpg

The Smith is slightly open. I'm also curious about which Smith it is.

it looks similar to the yzerman/gaborik which was like the coffey

So this is the new Smith on the left in the picture? Gionta's look weird to me when they are lh. I would like to see the SMith in a rh stick.

I also got a glance at the Smith pattern, but didn't inspect too closely, as I originally assumed it to be a Gionta clone. The pic above (thanks!), would say otherwise. Having use Gionta's and writing them off due to having too low a lie for my preference, I'm really interested in seeing a pic of a lie/rocker comparsion between a Gionta, Statsny (would I use, and curve myself), and a Smith, since Jason mentioned the Smith appeared higher. Sherwood is all over the place with their lie descriptions-their Iginla clone is listed at 6.5...That being said, I've been using Sherwoods top of the line for high level hockey for a couple of years, and have fallen in love with their sticks.

That is a very nice looking curve, though I need to see a RH variation. Used the N12 this year and was a big fan, if I can find them with this pattern, it may be magical.

On another note, its unfortunate they don't have it in blade format

I'll be at the shop tomorrow. I'll try to take another couple photos in RH and post them up. Any idea which Smith this would be? Zack?

Thanks, Jason. It wouldn't be Zack Smith. He's head to toe CCM.

I didn't have time to take photos today. Maybe tomorrow. The Sher-wood rep just happened to pop in though. He said that the Smith was modeled on the Ovechkin pro. I don't see it, but that's what he claimed. I forgot to ask him who "Smith" is. Maybe they just chose the most common name in the phone book to slap on their new pattern. I'm happy with my Giontas, but I will consider getting an N12 in the Smith some time soon.

Thanks for the update. Strange. This really isn't an Ovy pro at all. I wonder if the rep was mistaken and it was molded off a Kovalchuk pro? I think you might be right about the origin of "Smith", too.

If it's Zack Smith, he could easily be switching to Sherwood this offseason. The only other (non-goalie) Smiths in the league who are remotely close to being good enough to warrant naming a pattern after are Craig Smith (the Preds rookie) and Brendan Smith (Detroit dman, just breaking into the league, but a very promising prospect), the rest are all scrubs.

I thought it looked more like a Kovy pro too.

Good news. I checked again today and the lie is actually lower. I would call it a 4.5. It's noticeably lower than both the Gionta and the Burrows. There is also more rocker on the blade, especially in the heel, when compared to those curves.

Here are the updated pics. This time I used right hands.

Thanks for the pics Jason! That curve definitely looks interesting. I would like to give it a try!

However...

What's good news to some is bad news to other... Haha. Oh well, should be worth a try if it comes out in a replacement blade.

It doesn't in person. I am familiar with the P08, Kremlin and Crazy Ovie. None of those look like the Smith. It looks like a toned down Kovalchuk pro.

Nice! I would give it a try.

Is the lie similar or lower than the p08?

Is it more toe? Or just different all together? Because it looks similar, maybe less heel more toe?
