Fox Hockey - new stick company

Recommended Posts

This is my beer league teammate's brother's new company. I guess they are just regular dudes who decided to start a hockey stick company. Sticks are not available just yet, but will rival Bauer and Easton according to the company homepage. Will be interesting to see how this turns out:

I'm sure your buddies are nice guys, but their website doesn't inspire much confidence. A high school kid with dreamweaver could design a better site in about half an hour. Not to mention the typos, such as:

Fox pattern "Hudson"; similar pattern "Hash"

Yep, just relaying the message, I don't know the dudes who run it.

And yes, I agree with everything you said.

Plus, I'm sure the former head brass at twigmakers of yesteryear such as Titan, Victoriaville, Canadian, Koho, Bending Branches, et. al (RIP) would agree as well.

100% carbon composite shaft with 12K weave Kevlar Blade at 450 grams.

So a generic made in China stick that they slapped graphics on? It's too easy.

I think every new stick company says this. It's rarely true.

I'd bet it'd be a hit with decent looking graphics at $100 or so.

But that's the thing, there are plenty of companies out there already doing that. It's very hard for someone to distinguish between their products. You see small entry firms like Blakbak, Silverback, Kynetyk, Flarrow, Blue etc. etc. all put out sticks that are pretty much the same description as what Fox did. I don't know how successful these smaller firms are, but to the average consumer, their offerings are pretty much the same and generic. On the flip side, you see a company like Base gain a following because they have something very unique to offer in their custom program at an excellent price. While it would definitely be interesting to try a stick from these companies, I'm not too sure that an average consumer would take a chance on something when great $100-$150 offerings from Bauer, Easton and Reebok are more proven. Fox is being quite upfront and ambitious when they automatically declare that their product will rival the big guys, but time will tell whether or not their product is any different. Obviously this challenge faces every new equipment firm and those who innovate and diiferentiate will likely rise above the competition.

Did you ever notice they rarely specify which sticks from those manufacturers they will "rival". The reps always claim they are made in the same factory as one of the major sticks, often they will claim they are exactly the same and just have different graphics. That said, I would love to take a bunch of sticks and paint them all black and have see where they all come out some blind testing.

Yeah, but I bet they're going to try to go for a higher price. (Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't see the prices). I always roll my eyes when these companies over "comparable" sticks to the brand names, with fewer choices in curve and flex, at 80 - 90% of the price. I'm not taking the chance on a new company with less options, less accessability and less info about the product to save a measly 10-20%.

I would love to blind test sticks for a day, shoot between various ones and see which one actually did the better job.

I'm almost certain I'd be surprised

having said that...that logo is atrocious, I rather spray paint all my sticks black

May have that going on at SummerJam - one of the manufacturers has a blind test program. Going to try to get them to bring it with them.

Yeah, of course, especially with a totally new company. The respectable smaller companies like Combat etc will gladly offer legit specs and let you know where/who made them; unlike certain smaller companies who just say "this stick rivals or was made in the same factory as X", that generally leaves me calling b.s.
