beerleaguecaptain 999 Report post Posted June 18, 2012 I just made the switch from RBK 7K pro stock shoulders to 9950's. After years and years of bulky pads (I only play mens league) I decided to go light, low profile and minimalist. So far I've done two opens and a game and I feel great. Haven't had any real contact yet though.Anyone wearing this? How has it held up to shot or bumping?
Furyan 1 Report post Posted June 20, 2012 I have one. Feeling well, like wearing nothing, but not sure you can feel yourself protected.Few days got one slight shot on my chest. Feels like you've got shot right on you skin and bones directly -)
beerleaguecaptain 999 Report post Posted June 20, 2012 . Feels like you've got shot right on you skin and bones directly -)Yeah, doesn't have vey much padding at all does it... kind of like a thick sweatshirt ski jacket.I woner why no one has made pad like this but with a slighly thicker foam or plastic inserts. They'd sell like hot cakes!
althoma1 575 Report post Posted June 20, 2012 I think a few good options for something light weight and mobile with a bit more protection would be:Farrell shoulder pads with the caps removed - opinions vary, but I own these pads and feel the little cubes do a pretty good job protecting me from most shots to the chest or back. Now, there isn't much in the way of side or ab protection. They're also very comfortable and mobile.Down Low pads - theyre very mobile and low profile. There's a big thread on these. I tried them once at last year's Summer Jam. The shoulders are low profile and they're very mobile. They offer good spine and sternum protection and OK ab protection - the Farrells are probably better for the chest and back areas outside of the spine and sternum. They did get a little warm when I used them with a full long sleeve dri-fit shirt underneath.CCM CL U+ pads - I've only tried these on, but they'll definitley be just as light and the protection is considerably greater than the Sherwood pads when it comes to the spine, sternum, shoulders and biceps. Now, the caps are probably bigger than the Sherwoods (haven't compared the two) and they're certainly much more expensive.Personally, I'd recommend looking for some clearance or used Farrells and use those without the caps if you want great mobility with a little bit better chest protection than the Sherwoods. I found the the CCM shoulder caps to be too big but your 100% correct about the weight and protection factors. If you like those caps the pad is amazing. I bought the Farrells once and returned them. I love the way the feel and I agree they would be a pefect solution but I found that they sit up too high up on the belly and the bicep pads are short too.I was interested in the DownLow pads but I'm kinda... ummm... portly and I have really broad shoulders. On top of that I prefer a loose fit. I'm worried they would be a snugger, close to the body fit. I'm hoping they will be at SummerJam.
Chadd 916 Report post Posted June 20, 2012 I had a guy try to block my shot last week and took out my legs. My 5030s didn't help at all. I think it's time to splurge on some new shoulders.

XL instead of Large? They'd sit a little further down that way. I do agree that they sit a little high - I used to wear mediums in the white H500s and now have large black H600s. Both fit comfortably after adjusting the velcro, but the large size does sit a little lower (not much though).I found the large Down Low pads fit me fine and didn't feel restrictive and I'm not a small guy, plus they make XL. I understand not wanting to spend that kind of coin without being able to try them on though so hopefully you'll get a chance to do that.I agree with you on the CL pads - they're the lightest thing out there, but I didn't find the caps particularily small when I tried them on. They also bunched up a little when I raised my hands over my head and I tried this with both a large and XL (not that, that's the most important motion in hockey).Out of all the new high end pads I found the 2012 Grey and Blue Projekts to have the lowest profile caps and to be the most comfortable - you may want to try those on if you haven't already. For me, I feel the Farrells are sufficient for my needs, but if I was playing contact or decided I wanted more side rib protection I'd take a serious look at the new Projekts. They're likely overkill for beer league, but they felt lower profile and more mobile than most high end protective pads.

Considering creating a Frankenpad too.
beerleaguecaptain 999 Report post Posted June 22, 2012 Just had an idea....I think I am going to try to have the Sher-Wood shoulder caps attached to Farrell shoulder pads. Could be a pretty cool frankenpad....

cgrays12 0 Report post Posted June 22, 2012 Wow... impressive. How about I commission you to make a custom set of pads for me?Ive had the same offers haha. I dont have alot of the farrell blocks remaining, These were all from compression gear and work perfectly because theyre 1/2 the thickness of the shouldies. These were also my introduction to equipment repair/customization at work.

cgrays12 0 Report post Posted June 22, 2012 You tell me where to buy the blocks and I'll get them. I have absolutely ZERO skills. This should be all you need. it gives great coverage of the whole body and might leave us with an extra 3X9 square or twohttp://www.hockeymonkey.com/farrell-hockey-f7503-protective-compression-shirt.htmleven just buying the shirt and wearing it under your SWDs will make a huge difference, its technically going to feel the same

I'll buy one of those shirts and attach the foam to the back of my pads like you did to yours. Since I have the 9950's I already have a small back plate and chedt plate and I think it's enough. I would lengthen them a bit if I could but I don't think it's a deal killer.I will try to get a local showmaker or seamstress to do it... there is also a local equip guy in the area and maybe he would be willing... unless you want the job!! beerleaguecaptain 999 Report post Posted July 5, 2012 CGrays12 - thanks for the great advice and idea. While I didn't go as full bore as you did, I did add Farrell cubes to my shoulders as discussed. Here are the pics.Rear of the pads are at the top on this pic. Also my nasty feet on the bottom....BackFrontCan't wait to play in them.As I shop around I will consider ways to lengthen the pads at the bottom for more belly protection and perhaps some upper check padding if I find something that fits. Hammers44 4 Report post Posted December 4, 2012 dkmiller when you sewed the Farrell block sections on your shoulders did you stitch the entire way around or just kind of tack it? I've been looking for a way to add some padding to my 9950s and this looks awesome.
beerleaguecaptain 999 Report post Posted December 4, 2012 I sewed it all the way around... or rather I had someone do it for me! Since then aI have added a belly protector to lengthen the pads as I found they were rather short.
Hammers44 4 Report post Posted December 4, 2012 Man thats a whole lot of sewing! I'm thinking of tackling this project with my speedy stitcher but may try and find someone with a good sewing machine. Thanks for the help!
