Help! need gloves repaired before next game

Recommended Posts

I had a game tonight and when I got home to air out my equipment I noticed the pad on the thumb was falling off. I asked my wife to see if she can sew it back on (she's pretty handy with the needle and thread) but she said there's no where she can sew it to and through the thick pad...

I know people send out gloves to get repaired and repalmed at Georges or peaches but I have a game on Thursday! Do you think taking it to a tailor or shoe repair shop can do it? Any hockey repair shops in the s.jersey area? Voorhees maybe?

You could try a shoe repair shop. Buying a speedy stitcher may work because you can go through very thick materials with it. Judging by the pictures you could just super glue that back on.

As mentioned before, glue it down and stitch it wherever you can. It will take some patience but you should be able to do it yourself.

I didn't want to use glue because it will stiffen up the thumb on that hand. I also took it to a tailor and she said that she couldn't get her machine in there. I'm going to ask my wife about using a curved needle but there's really no room to work with. I'm going to try a shoe repair place and see if they can do it.

This might be a silly suggestion, but what about just grabbing a cheap/clearance/whatever pair of gloves from an LHS so you can send these away?

On a lighter side, it's really strange for somebody on MSH to own only one pair of gloves! ;) haha

Which is precisely why you need wax thread and a curved needle, in order to sew it by hand.

Outside of that, the glove isn't worth being sent out to repair as you could buy a new pair for the same price.

How much would this cost sending it out? They are only a few months old and were $180! It's really less than an inch that needs sewing...

As for the sewing, is the lifted pad getting sewn on to the little flap of extra leather shown in the 2nd picture or down and through the thin pad (black neoprene covered material at the base of the thumb shown in the picture) underneath the lifted pad? I don't know if I have wax thread but I know we have a heavy duty black thread thats for upholserty and supposedly high strength. Will this work, or does the wax thread have a dual purpose for water resistency?

Glue and some tape if you can't figure out a way to stitch it back together.

This! I have had great luck gluing fabrics before. It holds muc strong than thread and is easy to do.
