Airlines allowing hockey sticks as carryon again.

Recommended Posts

It's still six weeks away and most of the larger items are still not permitted as carryon items by the airlines.

I figured by the coat rack. But, as Chadd pointed out, it's the TSA that is going to allow it. Airlines will set their own policies.

They would have to be inside a closet, every item must be secured in a manner approved by the FAA.

american broke 3 surfboards and lost 2 for a total of 5. They also somehow lost my stick bag. The boards were in two board bags. How do you lose a surfboard bag?

Sticky fingers?

Sometimes, other times they just don't care. I know our company has a bar code on every bag and scans it every step of the way. At least they know have a good idea of where it was jacked, I mean lost. It's also a good idea to have a tag with contact information on your bag, so many people still don't do that.

Wow, that's an unusually detailed and appropriate graphic.

When I flew United to Asia over the summer, they included my stick bag as part of my hockey bag when I checked luggage.

Had some sticky fingers coming back. Had 2 sets of steel stolen from my hockey bag at LAX.

I use TSA approved locks on any bag I check. It won't stop everything, but it does cut down on things being removed from bags.

Likewise. None of my gear is top shelf, but it's what I have and I'd rather not lose it. It won't stop someone just walking off with your bag (or the airline honestly losing it), but it's at least some small discouragement.

For non-hockey stuff, I never check anything I can't lose or that is too expensive to easily replace (like my digital camera and lenses). If I can't carry it on, it stays home.

Are skates allowed as carry on?

When I researched the issue last summer, what I read (note: call the airline to check this, as it was purely secondhand info and I ended up checking my skates) was that you could carry them on -- but not the steel (because it's essentially a knife). So you'd have to remove the steel, check it, and then reinsert it at your destination. Still, steels are a lot cheaper than new skates, so if you have really nice skates it might be worth it.

If sticks are allowed through security then gate checking becomes an option which means you don't have to worry as much about someone not handling your $250 stick with care as it travels from the counter to the plane. If this is the case any time I actually travel with a stick (like once a year) I will definitely gate check it.

The same people load them into the cargo bin with the same level (or lack) of care.

Ohh I understand that completely, but I feel better being able to walk it all the way to the plane and dropping it off with one guy instead of it traveling all the way to the plane through the maze that is baggage. There is also a significantly reduced chance of it being lost or stolen this way as you have it in your possession until you hand it to the man to take bottom-side. Not very likely it gets stolen or lost from there.

I work for an airline, so you can see why I find that statement somewhat humorous.

Why do gate checked bags disappear often?

It can happen. Damage is done when they chuck the bags around, not sitting on a belt or in the belly of the airplane. I Just got home and several items inside my gate checked bag were broken. Fortunately, the rum in my hard sided checked bag is fine.

Yeah that is true I still feel safer walking it all the way there though personal thing I guess. Thank god your rum was safe. My gf managed to smuggle me back some cubans from Sint Maarten last week

I only smoke them in the summer on the golf course, I didn't bother bringing any back from Aruba. Maybe next month when I go to Canada.
