Non-leather (or leather-like) Glove Palms?

Recommended Posts

I was thinking about finding a better-ventilated pair of gloves for summer indoor and outdoor roller, and I started to wonder why hockey gloves always have leather or leather-like material in the palms. Has any manufacturer ever tried using some sort of nylon or polyester material for glove palms? It seems to me that something could be engineered that would breathe better and wear better - maybe even something that wouldn't be damaged by water-washing.

Am I missing something?

Nylon and polyester aren't exactly known for their gripping properties. You'd be losing your stick constantly.

The Mission inhaler series of gloves seem to have venting holes and mesh panels on the palms.

Not by themselves, but I'd think there would be something that could be added - little rubberized grip dots or something along those lines.

Almost like a glove liner with a little grip on it...

I really can't see that making a big difference as far as breathability goes. If you're really concerned about ventilation, get mesh gussets.

That's the thing - I have a pair of Eagles with mesh gussets (Leather x72's) and don't really notice much of a difference breathability-wise. I think the right combination of materials could be lighter weight, more breathable, and definitely less prone to wear from general use and things like stick tape and moisture. One has to wonder whether palms that wear through provide the manufacturers with too good of a re-purchasing cycle to be worth improving.

A lot of the older inline specific gloves had vents in them. It looks like the new Mission glove line continues that tradition as well.

MSH2 is polyester... I wouldn't think that they are considered "slippery palms"; are they?

Actually, I have said that I thought it was too slick for years.

So I see the posts before this and then see the grip dots mentioned here and really this just brings us right to the old stretch palm on the One90s, which was seriously dope. And yes I'm still playing with them and the palms are still in great condition (it helps that I've stretched shin tape over the knob). The stretch palm plus the vents on the top of the hand make it a very breathable glove.

The One90/One95 gloves are great for warm rinks, particularly the One90. The exterior of the glove is well vented and the palm was comprised mainly of a stretchy lycra-like material that breathed really well.

Edit: Looks like Gerbe beat me to it.
