Profile/Contour question

Recommended Posts

I went to have my Tones with LS3 steel contoured at the place I get them sharpened. He originally contoured them at 11 ft and I wanted to go down to 9 ft. He told me he couldn't do it. He claimed the place he gets his equipment from doesn't make a bar less than 11 ft and then went on and on about the reasons why this is the case. So, my question is, how do I get a 9 ft contour? I'm sure somebody must do it since I was told on this site that both total ones and Makos are both 9 ft. Is he just blowing smoke up my skirt since he doesn't have the equipment?

If you're interested in the back story, this is it. I just got the new Makos and love the agility I get with them. I'm not sure if this is a function of the skate or just the 9 ft radius though. So, in order to determine this, I wanted to have my total ones at the same radius. That would give me an idea if the performance was simply a function of the steel or something else. Granted, the fit of the boot is such I won't be getting rid of them, I just wanted the info for personal reference and future specs. So, as I say above, he told me he couldn't do 9 ft and that they didn't sell the equipment to be able to do it.

Further, a couple posters in the Mako thread suggested getting them profiled to make sure both blades were consistent. I thought about doing this before skating on them, but wanted to see how they performed as a baseline. I'm very very glad I didn't because I may not have had the same experience if I had taken them to this guy and gotten an 11 ft contour.

Thanks

Steve

He should have no issue being able to profile them to 9 ft. its a pretty common radius. I have contour bars as short as 7 ft. here in my store.

I'm really debating on going to a 11' radius from the stock 9 on these makos. Can anyone with my dimensions vouch for the change? between 5'11 and 6ft 200-205lbs.

anyone? I'm worried my cross overs are going to really suck.

The biggest complaint I see with people trying longer profiles is that they catch the toe a little more on crossovers. I know I felt like I did it when I first tried Graf.

what about the forward pitch of the makos? i'm assuming they're already at that 1+ forward pitch right?

I had a shop tell me 60$ for a profile!!!! Going to a longer profile isnt a big deal but like JR said you can catch, Solution is leave your tongue of your skate out from under your shin pad or leave the top eyelet open. That will solve the catching. I tried a bunch of different profiles and found that restricting/unrestrcting ankles can help with a short or long radius or at least help you transistion.

Makos have way more than that.
