Wide Helmet Cages

Recommended Posts

Just recently went from a visor to a cage full time. I had toyed around with cages for years before making the full transition. One problem I cannot get around is how narrow the cages are. I have a wide head and all my helmets have always fit me properly but as soon as I put on a cage it begins to put tremendous pressure on the sides of my head.

I have tried old Jofa, CCM, and Bauer cages. Most recently I bought a Reebok 11k combo and found the same problem with the 11k cage.

Does any have a similar problem and know of a solution? I've thought about bending the sides a bit. Anyone ever tried it?

The re-akt is quite wide. I actually have to push on the sides to get it into the J-clips. It's also the lightest cage out there afaik. I would HIGHLY recommend it.

i had this with the cage that came stock on my bauer helmet. i took unstrapped it the sides and pulled the cage apart at the sidres. it took some time but it did help a lot. i used my own atrength no vices or anything damaging.

but i will say when i went to my half visor not having the pressure on the sides was great. i even fit the helmet a bit smaller and it seems to be fitting me more snug now.

I second OptimusReim's suggestion. I have a Bauer RE-AKT large and it is too wide for me; pulls the temple guards of my helmet out - so it would probably work well for you.

I have a wide head, and couldn't find many helmets that fit. On the XL 5100, I've used a large 9500 and Itech titanium. I now have the L RE-AKT combo. The cages have all been just a bit wide, when it comes to fitting the J-clips, never squeezed the helmet.

Are you using a M cage?

You talking to me? M helmet with M cage.

I just have to give the top sides of the cage a bit if a push to get into the J clips. I don't even notice that I do it anymore.

I agree with the suggestions on pulling out the cage on the sides. However, be wary that many cages are made such that doing so can be more or less difficult. I've found that older Itech and current Bauer RBE cages are the easiest to pull out, while many of the Reebok, Bauer TrueVision and Easton cages to be quite unyielding.

I have Bauer cage, the 9900 and it's pretty wide. I really like it as well, the bars seem to fade while I am playing and it's not that heavy. It also bulges out so a guy like me who wears glasses doesn't get claustrophobic. It works well on my CCM helmet so there ya go. Good luck.

No, that was for the OP.
