x6.0 or x7.0

Recommended Posts

I'm about to buy some new skates and am looking at last year's Vapor line. There's a $50 difference between the x6.0 and the x7.0 - is there a big difference there?

I'll start off by saying that I haven't worn either skate, but I have tried both on and have many friends wearing both models. I can tell you that 80% of the people I know complain that the tongues on both are garbage, so you may want to take that into consideration. Personally, I would not consider either skate unless the price was marked down significantly. The average selling price seems to still be $450 - $500 Cdn, which IMHO is not good value.

The liner of the X7.0 is a different material. It feels nicer and seems like it will hold up a lot better. That being said the X7.0 is also heavier than the X6.0. Stiffness is about the same, you probably wouldn't notice a difference unless you are a particularly strong skater. If you're going to be playing a lot, like 5+ hours a week I would go with the X7.0. If you're just playing pick up the X6.0s would be more than sufficient. For $50 more though I would probably go with the X7.0.

@boo10 - they are selling right now for $329 and $379 USD. Is there anything else in that price point you'd recommend?

I was talked out of both of those and into the 5.0 by the rep at my LHS, mainly b/c of the tongues. The 6.0 and 7.0s, as someone noted, have the form-fit tongue while the 5.0 has the standard white felt. As far as weight and stiffness go I could not tell a large enough difference between the 5.0s and the 6.0s to go against the guy at the LHS. I've been very happy with my 5.0s.

What is it about the tongues that people don't like?

And what about the newer lines of these skates? Do they have better tongues (X70 or X80)?

The tongue on the 7.0 IMO..sucks. Decent skates though. If you REALLY are serious about your skates, you should consider APXs. The price has dropped alot now, and Having owned the 5.0 and 7.0s...there is NO comparison! The APX is the finest skate in the vapor line. I love mine. Spend the extra 200..you won't be sorry.

The preceding statement should be considered ONLY if the FIT of the APX is good for you.... ( I had to add that.)

i am a big fan of the x60, which is pretty much a x7.0 clone. i havent tried the x6.0 so im just speaking on my experiences with my current skate.

i've had my x60's for over a year and they still feel almost brand new. i skate at least once a week, twice sometimes and i cant say enough about how much i love these. i disagree with Zorlac's comments on how the APX is vastly superior, and a lot of NHL'ers would disagree too seeing how there's a ton of players who use the x7.0 over the APX. if you are really concerned about skate weight, then u should look at the APX, but to me it's not worth a $200 upgrade, especially if ur on a budget.

There are others here much more knowledgeable than I, so I will leave it to them to make a recommendation. The 6.0 and 7.0 are both decent skates. The tongue is bad enough to keep me from considering either though. If I had to wear a vapor from that line, I would go with the 5.0 or make the jump to the APX. If you really love the fit of the 6.0 or 7.0, there is nothing that says you couldn't pick them up and have the tongues replaced. Just remember that fit it king.

Are there other lines of skates that don't have major issues like this that I should look at?

What is it about the tongues that everyone hates?

@t6lock - do you mean the x:60 (not the newest x60)? I don't know if those are still being sold...

If you try them on you will see. The tongues are very thin and have hard edges. Many people complain of lace bite and more commonly of the edge of the tongue digging into their ankle. Some people have trimmed the tongue to alleviate the latter. Go ahead and try them on, you may end up loving them.

I have x7.0, they are so comfy and coming from a pair of total ones, I don't notice the difference in weight when skating, I don't even think about it.

Also I have had no problem with the tongue at all.

correct. the x7.0 is like 98% a clone of the previous year's x:60

By now I own 2 pairs of x7.0 and 1 pair of x:60, and never had any problem with either tongue.

I had a set of x6.0 and the corded edge of the tounge would leave a nice indenation from the top of my foot up to my lower leg and cut off circulation in a weird way. Sold them in favor of the APX2s that have a felt tounge.
