Bowhunter 0 Report post Posted September 4, 2013 I'm 6' 215 div 2 men's league player. I'm a good skater but had my first game tonight with my new APX skates. I got a size 10.5 and used to be in an 11.5 bauer x30 skates. Wow I felt very off balance back to front. I felt like I had a lot of heel behind me like I could lean back way further than before. I had them laced up pretty tight but I'm just wondering if there is anything I need to change with the profile or are the apx skates just sitting way different or does it have alot to do with a full size smaller?? I felt fairly explosive but just very off balance it almost seemed like I had to sit back more in the skates to feel balanced ?? Hard to explain any others similar experience ?? Buzz_LightBeer 975 Report post Posted September 4, 2013 It's generally difficult to get used to a new pair of skates in a game setting only. You went down a full size holder, and that with the upgraded boot will likely just take some getting used to.
chippa13 1844 Report post Posted September 4, 2013 It probably feels like more blade under the heel because now there is, relatively speaking, less blade out under and past your toes.
KoT 2 Report post Posted September 4, 2013 BowhunterU baking skates?
Bowhunter 0 Report post Posted September 4, 2013 Yes baking was done. I guess with the full size smaller the center balance line has changed for me. Just interested in others experience with this scenario.
Souldriver 64 Report post Posted September 4, 2013 The apx skates also have a fairly aggressive stance as well. A lot of factors here all of which can add up to a big difference in feel. Give it at least 2 more games and sed how it feels then.
Bowhunter 0 Report post Posted September 5, 2013 Here is my photo of my new and old skate. Quite the profile difference could somebody explain these and what differences I would feel
Darian 0 Report post Posted September 5, 2013 I felt like I had a lot of heel behind me like I could lean back way further than before...... almost seemed like I had to sit back more in the skates to feel balanced ??I had this same feeling in my APX skates coming from CCM V08's. The boots fit me VERY well, but the balance was a little foreign. It was kinda subtle, but when I was gliding with both blades flat on the ice, it just seemed like my center of gravity was farther back on the blade than felt natural. Occasionally during games if I made an awkward sharp turn it felt like I was going to lose a skate out in front of me and fall on my ass. After 3 months I had my LHS grind a plus 1 forward pitch, and it helped noticeably. IniNew 53 Report post Posted September 5, 2013 Here is my photo of my new and old skate. Quite the profile difference could somebody explain these and what differences I would feelGoing from 11.5 to 10.5 means you went down a size on the holder. That can affect your balance. Not too mention the old ones have clearly been sharpened a bit, also causing changes.
squat 5 Report post Posted September 5, 2013 Looks like you have a bigger radius which would do that. APX do NOT have any different stance. I am gonna guess you have a 9 or 10 on that X and a 10-or 11 on that APX. I would bet is a 9 on the X and 10 on the APX.The blade is your leaning back issue not the boot
Bowhunter 0 Report post Posted September 6, 2013 Squat I think you are right. One size smaller makes it feel a bit different but not as much as it does. I am going to take both pairs to a good shop and see what they think is best.Does anybody have any decently educated opinions on where I should start for radius? I play wing. boo10 323 Report post Posted September 6, 2013 In my opinion, if you're unsure of what profile you like it's best to start off with 9' neutral or 9' +1. It's a middle of the road profile with no extremes. If you're thinking CAG, I'm not sure what would be equivalent, so one of the sharpeners that post here would have to make a suggestion. Bowhunter 0 Report post Posted November 9, 2013 Just wanted to give a full update as to my findings now. Hope to help others. So as per above was having problems. Got them profiled and it was night and day. As for the APX skates they were very hard to break in but we'll worth it. 10 games in now I am comfortable and love these skates. They are everything I hoped I blocked a huge shot today in what seems to be a thin tongue and I am surprised that my foot was ok after the shot I guess the hard front on these helped a lot here. If anybody is looking at APX skates you won't be disappointed.
SCOMPL 14 Report post Posted November 9, 2013 The new/taller runner in your holders may make you feel a bit taller and off-kilter, but is a good thing. With a higher angle of attack available for turning, you can make tighter turns before bottoming out (boot hitting the ice). Any change in your skates will take a bit to get used to, and should not make you freak out about gains/losses. It simply takes some getting used to.
