Best Glove for Thumb protection?

Recommended Posts

Hey y'all,

I'm looking for recommendations for a set of gloves that have solid thumb protection. I keep getting jammed thumbs for the last few months while wearing my Warrior Bully gloves.

I play in a couple of different leagues but they are mostly casual, so I'm not looking to spend a crazy amount. $100 max with shipping.

I'm open to many suggestions in terms of brands or even tips I can do with my existing gloves.

Thanks!

-Steve

I had the same issue with getting my thumbs jammed. I had Warrior Luxe 13" and switched to Bauer 4 Roll pro 14". My thumbs dont get jammed anymore but I think that switching to a glove 1" bigger had more of an effect then the model switch.

If you like that style of glove, check out Bauer 4-Roll Pros. Lots of closeout deals on them right now due to the new Nexus version being released. If you like Warrior's, I would look at the Remix or Franchise. Bullys have softer padding that you find in a lot of gloves in a lower price range. I like mine for inline because they are light and cool in the summer, but for ice I like a little more protection.

I have used a 4 roll model, Bauer and winnwell, for the past 20 yrs and never had an issue. I have some 2011 Bauer 4 rolls currently and they are solid. 15 yrs ago I even broke my thumb and once the cast came off early at 4 weeks I played with a thumb brace in the glove with no issues.

The other night, I took a inline puck slapshot to the glove, right on the thumb block that is whited out in these pics:

7khx.jpg

My thumb hurt and swelled up instantly. And again, it was just an inline puck. If it were an ice puck, then I would have been hurting.

I had been under the impression that these gloves (Vapor APX) provide as much protection as all the other gloves, but were just tapered for a feel that is preferred by some (myself being one of them). I figured I could take a slapshot of slash off of this section, and that the $160 I spent would protect me. Apparently not. My friend examined the glove, and he thinks that the area I got hit in is PE insert only, very little foam, so the plastic slammed into my hand and bruised my hand.

I also noticed Ryan Callahan (wearing Warrior 4 Rolls) take a slash early in the 3rd period, off of the lower thumb section of the glove from a Devil of yesterday's game, and instantly shake his thumb as if it hurt. Is there a pair of gloves that exists, that allows for such a slash, without feeling it?

Anyway, which gloves offer the best protection in this area? I incurred the injury trying to deflect a shot in front of the net. I guess I got a little bit too in looking the puck into my stick. I prefer a tapered fit, but will go 4 Roll if I must, in the interest of not having to ice/ Mineral Ice/ anti inflammatory next time I take a puck off of this part of the gloves. I am considering:

Bauer Nexus 1000

Easton Mako M5

Easton Pro 4 Roll

Warrior Covert DT-2 Bone-X

Easton EQ50 Elite

Reebok 11K

CCM CL500

(other)

I also want a durable palm. None of this paper thin "great puck feel" nonsense that is going to rip, or harden up like sandpaper, after a few uses. I will gladly sacrifice puck feel in favor of palm durability, as I am not a dangler anyway.

And the lighter the better. I am now used to a glove that is about 300 grams (14 inch), I believe, so not looking to put cinderblocks on my hands here.

I liked the thumb protection I had from my TotalOnes before I hung up the skates (hopefully temporarily). Took some shots on the thumb and never felt anything in limited action in them. Of course with Supremes you have to like that fit.

Where on the thumb was it. On the thumb itself or more below near the meat of the hand. I'm guessing more near the base?

Good point, yes it is the meaty part- my thumb actually got away in the clear. However, I fear what would happen if a puck hit my thumb in these gloves, upon consideration of this incident. So it is the first pic, the right hand. It is red because I was icing it. And it is not that bad. But, it is bad enough, considering it was just an inline puck.

Tell you what- my TPS Response R10 gloves have thumb protection out the ying yang, including a removable bit of plastic to further reinforce the thumb from both slashes and hyper extension.

I have the Easton EQ50 Elite gloves and I love them. They're comfortable and I've taken a few shots off the hands without much pain. As far as slashing goes, you'll feel pain with any glove, but I feel pretty confident that it won't hurt much with these on
