I had the Winwell version back in 1991 or so.

I still wear mine. Don't hate on the plastic people, they did not have the foam technology 25 years ago that they do today. I had really great set of Koho shouldies until i cut around my net on a waived off icing as a bantam. Unfortuantely, Idid not realize that the pretty big guy chasing me cut across the crease to reach me on the other side, i got the puck on my stick, looked up, saw nothing but pissed off jersey in front of me. I dumped the puck up the wall, and then got summarily knocked into next week going from about the goal line to the back dasher in the air completing a triple Lindy and bruising my shoulder in the process. I sat out two weeks, the only injury I ever had from game play, and I got my first pair of Donzi's then depleting my paper route money. I got a second set later in college after Easton bought them. Never had a shoulder issue again. If I was buying today would I need to get pads like that, no, but remember when these came out the DVD's didn't exist yet and the rich kid in your neighborhood's home stereo system had the first 5 or 6 cd carousel player you had ever seen and the ability for you to randomly play songs from 6 different discs just blew your mind (and MTV actually played music videos)

I love the CCM line for low-profile. Was a HUGE fan of the CL shoulders when I had them.

I've been using DownLow shoulders for almost a year now. Fantastic product (and don't ride up like regular shoulders do when you have pants way too big for your height).

I'd be hard pressed to use any other brand than CCM for shoulder pads. Their low profile cap design is great and they have great mobility. I have the U+ 9 and love them. Would like to get into the CL eventually but these do so well I may never do it.

I play in a beer league so no checking. But there are plenty of accidental collisions and the occasional cheap shot. Good to have the protection.

I have 2 pairs of the CL, large and small since the large would puff out when I sat on the bench. Needless to say I'm wearing the Sherwood 9950's and have 2 expensive pairs of shoulders sitting in my garage. And the caps are too big for non check leagues. They do breathe well and I took a slap shot to the spine and didn't feel a thing-they just don't fit me right. Thought about removing the caps and putting my current caps on them but I'm happy with what I have now.

Fit is a huge part. If the fit isn't there then you're never going to enjoy the features of said brand. Very important point.

the chest piece being so large is the only thing that kept me out of the CL.

It is pretty large, and zero flexibility there. I could definitely see that being an issue for some.

The only reason I'm not still in mine is because they (like most shoulder pads) use straps that wrap around the ribcage/love handle area. When you're wearing pants two sizes too big (for your height) because of your width and suspenders, putting shoulder pads over top of the suspenders makes them ride up A LOT.
