NY Rangers gloves, why?

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure if this belongs here or not, but why do all the players on the NY rangers playing with gloves with the huge backroll?

[i can't find a picture]

Can anybody tell me?

last year they were pretty much short of mandated by Torts as he loves his players to block shots and its extra protection. this year players must be used to it so they keep it but im sure some have reverted back as well.

So skaters are supposed to block shots with the backs of their hands?

Give me an answer like I'm an idiot who has literally no idea who these people are, or why they have/deserve different gloves than everyone else in the league. Not that I am that kind of idiot.

Because this is a popular shot blocking technique (Along with other sprawling variations)

Putting the hands in a more favorable place to be hit by a puck. So therefore the added padding to the back rolls..

Look at the above. Also blocking shots is mostly getting in front of the shooter. At times it's unpredictable when the shot will go or if it will deflect on the way to you so that's why added protection everywhere is encouraged for this type of play. I bet people who have blocked shots with their face didn't try to but it happens.

I see where you're going with this question and I have asked myself the same thing. Tortorella is a strange man (IMHO), and is very particular about things that most people aren't particular about. I've been hit in the back of the hand with shots and it doesn't hurt, and modern day gloves do not require additional padding. I think Tortorella really wants his skaters to wear a goaltender blocker on the back of both gloves.

Not trying to knock your playing ability or anything but the speed the puck travels in the show is probably a lot faster than the leagues most of us on this board play in. The same would go for players breaking bones in their feet from blocking shots despite wearing a stiff boot.

Ding!

As polished as NHL-ers are, freak accidents happen. The puck could go where the hands are, the shooter could catch an edge and end up whacking the back of the hands with a stick. Shot blocking in that manner could easily end in injury. After all, shot blocking is in some ways like playing goal.

Callahan broke his hand about 3 years ago blocking a shot. Since then they all had the extra pad. I have seen this season many players without them however.

They had three guys with broken hands in a very short span of time and started putting the pads on at that time.

^^ good find on the pic. I'd add that Tinderella does seem to get his guys releasing the bottom hand and turning that around as well, but that's just an impression.

Craig Ludwig, where are you when we need you?

You are onto something. He is increasing size and while its not that much it might help. Personally i cant stand him, I think his style makes a regular season goalie look much better only to fold in the intense playoffs when teams have the film and beat you like a rented mule. Case in current point. Loungo has allowed a lot of soft goals that he thinks his D is gonna block

I just wish guys would break his shot blocking first, skating scoring and team play wwwwaaaayyy down the list, by blasting into the shot blocker.

This. Drury and a couple of others early in the season. I believe it wasn't Torts either, I think it came form Slats. Mandated the entire organization (AHL WolfPack) install them immediately. Talked to one of the NYR EQM's, they believe the current gloves don't offer as much backroll protection as the old leather ones did, hence the add on pads. First couple of years they were sewn on by the EQM, now most are from the factory that way.

Yeah but it doesn't help the team that's shooting and now you're trying to punish or injure the guys that is blocking the shot. Meanwhile, especially with torts, you would be benched if you didn't follow his philosophy.

That's like me having my kid go over to your kid and beat him up because he likes to eat his hamburger before eatting his fries bc he was taught that. Either way the job gets done.
