Putting bigger holder on skate

Recommended Posts

I am wondering if it is possible to put on a bigger holder than the usual one on a skate.

To be more precise, one of my players got new skates. They now fit better, since they are half a size smaller. By going down half a size, the holder is now smaller and the length of the blade is different. She asked me if I could put his old blade with the new smaller skate. She use to skate on Size 5.5, 254 holders, and now have size 5, 246 holders. They are for APX2 skates.

Basically, if this is possible, how can I do it?

Thanks!

I believe it is possible but I wouldn't do it if I was you. She's better off getting used to the smaller holder because putting on a larger holder will only slow her down. With a smaller holder, once she gets used to the size she will be likely be slightly faster and more agile on the ice.

It can be done, players often like a larger holder so they can get more steel on the ice. Just make sure whoever does the mounting knows what they are doing. The rivet hole pattern on the larger holder will be different than the 246. Drilling in between the existing rivet holes is sometimes the best way to mount these, otherwise you get holes that are more like slots, which allows the rivets to move and pull out faster.

What he said. The holders arent on the edge anymore and I think that was for a reason and as long as the blade is centered you will be fine

Isn't a 10' radius a 10' radius, regardless of the length of the steel and size of the holder? Won't you always have the same amount of steel on the ice with a given radius?

Yes, there's just more of it on the working profile. It's really more of a front to back balance issue. I've had customers who have smaller than usual feet that I've bumped up the holder size to help with their stability.

I've done it the opposite way when switching from Bauer's to Reeboks; I put a shorter holder and steel on the boot because I didn't like the length. It can be done. Just make sure you have someone good do the drilling or else they could mess up the boot. Good luck!

Would it be easier to switch the Edge holder for Light speed 2's, and use the Ls2 power still to get a few more MGM's of steel on the ice?

Thanks for all the advice.

I convinced my player to try and adjust to the new blade. I still made a template of the two holder sizes to see where I would need to drill for new holes. If I use the holes in the back, I won't need to drill holes for the back part, and the holes in front should be far enough. The toe of the holder is going to stick out a bit though.

If I run into trouble, I'll come see you guys.

Working with the girls for the last 15 years this happens all the time. The other reason it's better to put a larger holder and blade on is that girls typically have longer legs and shorter torso so they can get a longer stride and the extra blade helps with push and stability.

Now when it comes to mounting you have to adjust for both front to rear and side to side you cant just use the same holes at one end you will throw the balance off in the skate.

When you say adjust the holder, do you mean to center it with the boot? If that's the case, wouldn't the previous holes make it harder to drill new holes?

Yes,, and this is one reason it's a bad idea. Rivets will end up loosening and holder alignment will shift. You never specifically said what was the symptom she had on the new skates. Pretty much everyone who gets new skates has issues at first, mainly related to the shape of the new steel vs the sharpened down shape of the old steel that their muscle memory has adapted to. If she just give it a little time, her body mechanics will adjust to the new skates just fine. I'd hold off on a holder change till then.

A longer blade helps with stability if the skater has that symptom, but generally going bigger is not noticable while skating. If the longer holder is mounted more forward, the toe will engage sooner in the leg extension which can result in more power on the pushes, but again barely noticable by average skaters.

No it is very simple. The holes that were very close you simply enlarge slightly and use coppers. I have had zero issues in the 15 years of doing this. then the rest are new holes and you simply put the rivets back in. you may add a couple extra copper's but other then that its good to go. Profile as she had before maybe a slight bit less make sure the toe and heel are "blended" (Not grounded off as some do) and you are good to go.

I use to have 280 holders but went down a size in skates. Now on 272 with my new skates. After a few months I still feel a little wobbly on them compared to my old skates. Was thinking of just changing the profile from 9 feet, to 10/11. Would changing to a bigger holder be better?

All depends in my mind if your of the skill and skate that amount that it would be something you would like down the road. If you are skating once a week in a mens rec league just profile them. If your laying a fair bit at a higher level then sure why not you would then keep the 9ft most likely and feel more stable.

Here is a pair just completed both going up 1 size. 238 to 246 and 230 to 238. One is top 5 in scoring in our league and the other is Team Captain of the U18 for Canada so I am willing doing just fine with the extra length. Actually the Vapor is a 8.5-9.5 forward and the Supreme is a 9.5-10.5 Defense.
