Equipment needed, from inline to ice

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

So 99% of my playing the past couple of years has been of the inline variety and i havnt played ice since i dont know when. This coming winter me and my friends are planning a couple of rec and friendly games on ice and i want to be included but i knwo i dont have a full set of equipment for ice. Thanks to my inline playing i have all the usual stuff, gloves, elbows, shins, helmet etc etc and i have a pair of eq40 skates that i bought on closeout whos edges havnt even tasted ice yet.

Now besides needing ice pants and shoulders is there anything im missing that ill need to play? these are all co-ed, no checking, friendly games so im not looking to tank up. and even though we have players of all skill levels, were planning on pairing people off by their level so everyone has fun. any recommendations on gear for a big wide chested fellow? and recommendations (besides the members listed) on where to look as im not trying to spend a mint on this stuff as ill wear it very little.

since you have everything except ice pants and shoulders you need more of the little stuff. Hockey socks, garter belt/ jock with velcro to hold up socks, mouth guard if that tickles your fancy.

Or buy a ice girdle and shell. If you get a good girdle it has velcro to hold your socks up and you can change the shell when you want to change team colours.

Non check you don't need shoulders to start with and after a while you most probably won't wear them at all. Only comment I have depends on the level you are playing against, I prefer a cage at the lower levels as they don't have as much control over the stick. Other than that you are good to go once you have some socks. Plenty of guys turn up at our scrimmages wearing inline gear, a little bit of chirping but all in good fun till they get their ice stuff sorted out.

well my normal jock has velcro cuffs/clamps on it but i just dont use it. its a real great compression short jock and i think maybe ill search around and see if anyone has another one, as i dont wear a girdle for inline but my easton jock has pads in it.

with the helmet i can either use my reakt with the cage or use my old but still good bauer 8000 and put on the old cage or visor. Itll be various levels so ill probably stay with the reakt+cage though because there isnt a real reason to change.

Ill def get pants and ill keep my eye out on here as there seems to be a lot of them being sold by members (any recommendations for a wide but shorter fit?) Ill ask my buddies about shoulders, If anything I would just need a lighter pad there too.

Just shoulders and pants really. Maybe a stick just for ice, if most of your roller hockey is outside....neck guard if you want to be safe.

may get a neck guard just in case. i use a roller backpack as a bag but i may be able to fit everything in it if im crafty and i dont need shoulders. if i need shoulders i could always carry them separate too.

I made this switch a couple years ago. I needed skates, pants, jock (went with the compression shorts cup combo with the velcro attachment areas), shoulder pads, hockey socks, & some bigger jerseys. I chose to upgrade my helmet (new with cage) & gloves, but had there not been issues with those, I wouldn't have needed to make the change (helmet was cracked & super old & my old gloves were a touch to big - went down from old Easton 14.5 to Bauer Supreme 14). I upgraded my bag after the first season because I got tired of tetris-ing my gear into it, but again that was more choice than anything else.

When I went from roller to ice, I ended up upgrading my elbow pads. Through the nature of the games, roller has less contact, and being less comfortable on ice I'd assume you're more likely to fall (at least, I was more likely to fall). I've always felt like sport court is a little more forgiving than falling on than ice. A couple hard falls on the point of my elbow made me decide it was worth the money to upgrade to something more protective.

You can get sherwood 50/30 shoulder pads for $30-$40. It's probably not going to protect you from a giant collision at just the wrong angle, but it might save you some pain if you catch something in the chest, or fall shoulder first into the boards.

My elbow pads now are tanks, and I get made fun of bc they are so big and old but they fit great and stay in place and protect me well. I'll look into those shoulders though btw.
