Graf/Sidas Custom Footbed Question

Recommended Posts

Hope you guys can offer some advice!

I am currently skating on a pair of Bauer NXG 7.5 E/A skates since the beginning of the hockey season. Both my feet still hurt and cramp after about 15 minutes on the ice. I skate a total of 7 ice times week (5 practices and 2 games), the skate is definitely broken in.

I am looking at Custom Sidas footbeds to remedy my problem. I know Graf offers their version, the Graf Custom Hockey Pro.

Problem is I am currently in England and can only find ski/bike shops that offer the Sidas system.

What Sidas footbed is similar to the Graf Custom Hockey Pro that LHS in North America provide?

The Sidas technician mentioned that he adds a heel stabilizer to the footbeds once moulded and grinds them to fit the footwear.

For those who have Graf Custom Footbeds done at your local LHS did they glue the heel stabilizer? I am wondering if the heel stabilizer will improve fit and stabilize the heel? Or maybe change the pitch of the skate by lifting the heel and take up too much volume?

Thanks guys!

If you're talking about the Conformable Sidas beds, there is a heel cup similar to the superfeet which are glued to the foam-formed footbeds.

Thanks. Basically I am looking to get as close as possible to getting a Graf Hockey Pro Footbed molded to my foot. Without any LHS offering the Sidas system I have to go to a bike shop. The technician mentioned the heel stabilizers. Would this be a good idea? Or would it completely throw off the fit and pitch of my current skates? He seems very knowledgeable about the fitting process but I am his first hockey customer.

Any of you guys have the Graf Custom molded footbeds done at a LHS? Did they offer the heel stabilizer option? Also what did you think of them?

I picked up some Superfeet yellow today after reading some posts about them on MSH.

Hopefully I'm on the road to pain free skating soon!

Some photos of what I mean.

I got them done. I found them to be more comfortable than Superfeet being a full mold to my foot, but Superfeet did offer more support in the arch as well as in terms of pronation/supination. I believe Superfeet also do a custom Grey custom thermoformable one if you can find someone who'll do it.

If you do end up doing the Graf/Sidas Custom stuff, do rebake your skates with them in the boot (add the insoles after you take them out of of the oven like every other footbed). This will help your skate mold to your feet with the insoles accommodated for.

I have the Graf Custom Hockey Pro Footbeds and they don't include heel stabilizers nor are they offered. They look just like the cycling footbeds shown above but without the heel stabilizer (and different colors of course). The heel stabilizer might take up too much space in a skate. I guess you could have the cycling footbeds made omitting the heel stabilizers to fit in your skates.

I have the Sidas Graf custom, not the custom pro (slightly thicker), and they are quite possibly the single best hockey investment i've ever made and help to justify the $799 I spent on my NXGs.

Thanks for the advice guys! Hopefully I can get them done here in the UK

Syinx did you have them done in Vancouver? I am heading back there after the season. Can I ask where you got yours?

Yeah, as you said, I've only ever seen sidas etc in ski shops and such, I know snow and rock in chertsey will deffo do moulding of ski specific sidas footbeds, whether you can get them to order in hockey ones I've no idea, but that may your best bet other than the bikes hop you mentioned.unfortunately the guy who brings Graf stuff into the uk is totally useless, so I wouldn't try to go that route.

Good luck!

I called Snow and Rock and a few other places. The place that seemed the most knowledgeable was WyndyMilla in Seale, Surrey. It's a custom bike shop. I talked to a guy named David and he showed me the Sidas machine and all the options they have footbed wise.

He also told me that he usually adds a heel stabilizer. Thanks everyone for letting me know that you did not have this added to your Graf hockey footbed.

He then sent an email to Sidas asking them if they can order a Hockey Footbed and asked them if the fitting process was any different. Seemed like a guy that genuinely wanted to offer the best service possible.

Fingers crossed he can get them in.

The 3 feet foot bed might be a better choice for you since they will offer different levels for arch and heel support, which is the most common cause of foot aches.

The custome beds will make a molded bed to your foot style, but might not offer additional support you might need.

Here's the link:

If there is a store that has a foot station to see how your foot style looks, you can order the Graf inserts to match.

We sell the this style in our store and they work very well.

I just got a set done today, but I for some reason forgot my skates at home so they said I'd have to bring them and the footbeds back in for trimming.

My questions is: Can these just be trimmed by scissor myself? I ask because frankly, I don't really want to go back to the store I got them from. They were pretty rude, and slow, among other things, and I'd rather just save myself the hassle.

I'll go back if I have to, though.

Maybe they were having a bad day or maybe they're always rude, but I've seen video of these being made and then trimmed, and I would recommend you get them done by someone who has experience, if only because if they cut it too much or somehow mess them up, hopefully they'll redo them. It could be you got to them at a bad time, but if they're rude a second time, then you know it may not be a special event for them. In any case, I would have someone who's done it before trim your soles.

Gotcha. I'll suck it up and take them back, then. Thanks.

I'm not sure what my LHS used to trim my Sidas footbeds but I remember the guy working there had to smooth out the edges with the cross-grinder.

I didn't find mine to be any better than my Superfeet, personally.

Really? I've used both and I would compare the Graf to Superfeet akin to my Makos to Total Ones. By that I mean, the custom fit of the Grafs was night and day compared to the Superfeet in my opinion.

Really? I love mine as they were molded to my feet and fit my arch perfectly. The guy really took his time to get them spot on. I can't attach photos, but mine are like the red one on the right. I hated super feet....

Mine are too, but they don't feel any better really. Mine are grey though, more like the photos earlier in the thread. Oh well. Worth the experiment.
