New shins? Nexus?

Recommended Posts

So, I think it's about time I picked up a new pair of shins. I'm using an old pair of black/blue Bauer Classic 1000 14" shins circa 98-99'. The things are tanks and I love them but they are following apart. I'm trying to find something that fits similarly. It's a throwback and I'm hoping a couple people remember these pads and can make some suggestions about new ones. I'm thinking the Nexus line might be close. I'm 5'7 and 190 with pretty thick calves and legs so something like the Stealths are off the table for sure. I prefer a thicker pad. Any suggestions? Thinking something mid-level.

I have the Mako M5, very good mobility and protection. They aren't completely beefy/wide but are not slim profiled either. Overall all the mako protective gear I've at least tried on in a store has felt great. Aesthetically they sometimes leave something to be desired but who cares if it's under your jersey/socks.

Stock for sure. I tried on some Supremes today and I liked the fit. Unlike anything I'd tried before, given I haven't bought any in a while.

Can anyone speak to the difference between the Vapor and Supreme series of shins? I don't quite get what the anatomical vs tapered fit means in this context.

Recently upgraded to the Nexus1000 13". No break-in time at all, super light, super snug fit and extremely easy to move around in. I tried the APX and Totalone NXG and found them to be too bulk especially in the calf. I skate four days a week and have found theses to be the absolute perfect shin guard. I'm almost contemplating buying two pairs just in case. I also love the white look of them.

Wound up going with the Nexus 600 shins after this weekend. Very light, and did not even need to remove theinner lining to save on weight for my personal preferences.

I picked up the Nexus 600 last summer. I like them a lot. My Eastons from high school finally split, and I had to replace them. I like that I can take the liner out of the Nexus and let them dry or wash them.

I was using nexus 1000 shins for about a year, and was never really happy with them. I found the liner scratchy, and they never seemed quite right in the kneecap area.

Switched to mako shins. Wow. Absolutely love these things. Wrap right around the leg. So comfortable!!

I have the Vapor shins and have been looking to upgrade as we are moving up a division where the shots are harder. Was looking at the Nexus line as I have heard good things but I'd be interested to hear the comparison between the Mako and the Nexus. Like a poster above, I don't get the anatomical vs. tapered talk. Any help is appreciated.

I really like my new Makos. I went with the M5 purely because they are a little less beefy and I don't need the extra protection, not because of price.

That being said, I am tall and slim, and IMO they are pretty tapered compared to most other shins. They fit me great though.

I have worn Nexus 1000s for a year now. Very comfy and snug fit. I mostly play D and have blocked many shots wearing these and felt only a dull thud and enjoyed hearing the moan of the poor opponent.

Only complaint would be I have had to re-sew the velcro on one bottom strap where it came out. Last week the other bottom strap started to tear on my strong side leg with its Schwarznegger-like muscle. I like these shins so much I cut a piece of velcro strapping and sewed a replacement. Now better than ever.

And I'm short and fat, and still fit beautifully :) They're not big wide shins like the RBK or Nexus, but the fact that they wrap so well around the leg makes them even better imo.
