Kessel'sOversizedSuit 18 Report post Posted February 26, 2014 So, I've finally succumbed to an injury in my top hand wrist. For a while I was playing through pain, but it's gotten unbearable. I've taken a month off now and thought I'd be back at it, but the wrist is no better. Looks like my season is done as I'm going to need to give it a good couple months of rest and I couldn't be more bummed out. This is the longest I've not played hockey since I started 5 years ago. Hockey has become a real passion and I feel like I've been robbed of that. Not only that, but I'll be limited to leg and core only work outs during this time, which is not fun. What do you guys do/have done to keep yourself fresh and motivated while injured? mojo122 535 Report post Posted February 26, 2014 Have you had a Doctor look at your hand/wrist? Since a month off hasn't made a difference you just might have an injury that isn't going to heal with rest and time. Friend of mine had a similar problem and turned out that his was because of a completely torn tendon in his wrist.
Kessel'sOversizedSuit 18 Report post Posted February 26, 2014 I haven't gone to the doc yet, because going to the doctor always results in 5 more appointments and or other doctors. But I'm at the point of relenting on that as well and I've made an appointment for friday.Torn tendon? oh god.

gosinger 122 Report post Posted February 26, 2014 I haven't been on the ice for almost 3 months now, due to a groin pull followed by a broken ankle. Dealing with injuries is tough. You can't quit on hockey, but you have to find some other hobbies to keep yourself busy (if you focus entirely on hockey during that time, as I did for 4 days when I had gotten my non-walking-cast, you will go crazy...). The time you invest in hockey can be spent on * improving your theoretical knowledge of the game - i.e. reading up on positioning & support, weisstechhockey is a good starting point * maintain your gear - do some repairs / customizations (think velcro replacement with a speedy stitcher) * core strength workouts I would also recommend buying the book "Hockey tough" by Saul L. Miller, it has a 20 page chapter on dealing with injuries (both mentally as-well as physically), and plenty of points on the mental aspects of hockey. tareatingrat 4 Report post Posted February 26, 2014 My god I'm thankful for free (yeah, yeah) healthcare sometimes.I was out for about two months with a knee issue. Originally thought it was a level 1 MCL sprain, but turned out to be a deep bone bruise. Didn't figure that out until I finally forced my doctor to refer me for an MRI. By the time I'd had my MRI (free is not quick), I was already playing again, but it was nice to know I wasn't going to mess it up again. If it's not better in a month, it's probably something you should really get checked out. Chronic pain and injuries suck. Trust me.Anyway, I watched a lot of hockey and stickhandled in the basement as much as possible. Since that's less of an option for your particular injury, keep up the workouts, try something different but transferable. Soccer, inline skating, try improving your wrong-hand stickhandling, etc. When my knee was good enough to skate but not good enough to play, I went out and "reffed" at my regular pickups. Just to keep from going insane.Best of luck to you.

MountainKing 10 Report post Posted February 28, 2014 I injured my wrist last June. I initially thought I broke it so I went and got it x-rayed and it came back negative so I waited it out a month rather than push it any further. It was no better after a month so I finally did what I needed to do and it turned out I had a TFCC injury in the wrist. I won't say how long recovery took until I was back on the ice because my number was just depressing, but go get it checked out asap. By not going I delayed therapy and recovery. I'm still not 100% recovered, the doctor and therapist both think that by delaying treatment I added about 2 months onto my recovery time, not sure how that works out but go get it looked at. Kessel'sOversizedSuit 18 Report post Posted March 3, 2014 So I apparently just have a severe case of tendonitis. Got some industrial strength anti-inflamatory meds and a trip to physio lined up. hopefully will be back on the ice within 4 weeks. Makes me upset with myself for not going to the doc sooner. My own stubbornness has delayed my recovery time, by at least 6 weeks. what a doofus I can be.let the healing begin.

MyBoxersSayJoe 133 Report post Posted March 8, 2014 I'm playing with an inflamed tendon in my right wrist, which is my top hand. Some days are better than others. I wear a wrist guard to stabilize it during the day and take it off for games. I'm also on an anti-inflammatory. I've only done leg and core work with my trainer for the past month. I'm hoping it'll heal up soon so that I can continue with upper-body work. I've shrunk a fair amount as a result of this.
Stewie 721 Report post Posted March 8, 2014 the only long term injury i have sustained in my years of sports was a fractured thumb. It happened during baseball all star game practice when the coach put me at catcher for the first time. I didnt know what I was doing, and my glove was too big, so it fell off when i went to grab a pitch. I, however, got to play hockey with a huge glove over the cast and my normal 8 year old sized glove on the other hand. It probably looked a bit funny
