I need new bauer skates - HELP!

Recommended Posts

I need advice...havent bought skates since 1996, just started playing again - club hockey in grad school. I've always worn bauers and am now wearing the old bauer comps I used in college. They are totally broken down and i need new skates. What should I get?

I hear the vapors and supreme line are nothing like the bauer supremes that im used to...much stiffer now - with no forward flex. Im not sure how I would adapt to a drasticly different skate. Also, I'm concerned that the sizing and pitch might have changed.

Im about 200 lbs - defense - and looking for a skate similar to what im used to, but still want to benefit from the new technology. Im looking at a pair of 6000 on ebay for 125$. Is this my best bet? My bauers are an 11d - I wear a 13 adidas shoe - little on the narrow side.

..Also my my old jofa bubble is dented, and bent - Anyone have one to sell?

i would sudgest that if you need new skates u should go to your local hockey shop and try on all the differnt brands in your size and price range and take the ones that fit best.

of course...I tried on the vapor xx, 7000's and graf 703's. My issue is that there's alot you cant tell from trying on a skate in the store. You dont really know a skate until its broken in...not to mention that cerain models have quirks and odd characteristics that dont present themselves until you had them a while. I im hoping to benefit from the experience and expertise of others on the board...also hoping someone can point me in the derection of some good deals or old stock. Anyone?

I don't know if you have a budget constraint but the 8000s are going for around $330 Cdn at Cyclone Taylor. If you're willing to go all out though, people here have been saying that the 8090s are probably Bauer's best skate in their lineup.

You kind've need to determine a fit, there are some good deals out there. The deal Kobe mentioned, there's some discounts on the THG Nike Force skates at hockeymonkey. Pureflies or Blackflies can be found cheap, but sizing is limited. Seems the Tack line is onsale alot as well. Fit will be most important.

K i wouldnt get the xx's because they are known to break down really fast. Also if the skate doesnt fit your feet properly, your feet will start to hurt and it will hinder your skating ability. You should base your choice on fit not just the xtras that come with the skate. Sure the extras are a bonus but if the skate doesnt fit you properly you are not going to benifite from the extra.

Just be careful, about 1/3 of the Bauers I've seen in the shop have crooked holders. Not to mention almost all of the steel is bent on any Bauer or CCM over a year old.

its not the greatest thing to see on a new pair of skates..but most steel can be bent back into shape in less than a minute...

Bauer Classic Gold's are the closest though, although the 6000's will be a bit less volume and i think somewhat lighter...i liked the Gold's..but I think I'd go with 6000's next after I move on from my 7000's...staying away from the post game refreshments and stuff probably goes a little further than 80g on each skate!!

I haven't had much luck on the skates where the steel is bent coming out of the holder. Mismounted holders is a much bigger problem on the new skates.

what do you mean "much luck" Chadd?..we used to have a little tool on the side our Blademaster that straightened those out right away...or do you mean you get crooked holders and not bent steel??

I have the same tool but it doesn't seem to work too well on badly bent steel. Mismounted holders is a problem with no good solution because they usually aren't so far off that you can drill a new hole.

Ask Wristshot19 about what I did with his V12s. I dismounted the back rivets and the thing sprung out about 1/2". They were forced into position, but actually, they were forced crookedly. When the back rivets were removed the skate was aligned.

I was just in Cyclones (Oak and 49th) and the 8000s were $400  btw I just bought 8090s :D.

Jim, I haven't had any luck trying to straighten bent steel on brand new skates either. If steel bends after some use, maybe from taking a shot, it can be straightened--but it will bend again easily. Mismounted steel/holders, like the guys said, is a whole different problem. There's no straightening steel if the holder is warped.

Really? They were advertising in the paper that they were taking $200 off of the regular price which was $530 that last time that I went in.

i agree if the holder is warped your SOL..that's why I was asking chadd first about it...

maybe i've just been lucky in the bends i've had..sometimes i've had to just swap out skates and RA them to Bauer..thankfully last year when it was an issue, not sure about it this year, we had mostly bent steel and not really that much in the way of a holder issue..
