facemask regulations

Recommended Posts

Just curious, what is everyone's local rules regarding facemasks for adult leagues?? I'm on long island, NY, and my local rink requires a facemask in the adult leagues. However i noticed that a lot of other places in neighboring states don't require them for adults. I understand, obviously, the concerns as well as insurance guidelines. Personally though, I think I would leave mine off if it were an option. I see a big decline in my stick handling and peripherals when i'm playing ice or league roller where one is required.

It seems that whenever i'm in a game or have a watched a game where there were no facemasks, there seems to be an awareness among players that people aren't wearing them, and there are much less "dangerous" situations, ie: less blatant high sticks. Just wondering what everyone else's local rules were and others' opinions.

PS- i'm not trying to campaign any kind of "no facemask necessary" policy, so no need to jump on me if there are any safety gurus out there.

In jersey the rules, to say the least, are lax. I started playing in adult roller leagues when I was 15 and pretty much can count the times on one hand I've worn a cage for roller. Even towards the end of the time I was playing 18 and under they allowed over 18 players go to without cages.

yeah the games i referred to watching where they didn't have masks were in jersey. I drove to a rink there to pick up my labeda chassis at the pro shop and while i was there i stayed for a few games.

i play pickup ice hockey all the time and they only make you wear a helmet, no mask, regardless of age. my local roller leagues are strict on wearing them though, at all ages. it kinda sucks b/c outside of the league i never wear one, which is prob stupid b/c thats the reason i can't see when i have a cage on in my league games, i'm used to playin w/out it. i tried a full plexi shield but the damn thing kept foggin up, so i went back to the wire cage.

what rink in LI do you play at? and which one in jersey did you stop at?

But yeah, I hate cages also, every time I could take it off when I was younger I would. Last season playing PIHA I suffered a pretty good facial injury, played half the game the next day with a cage, played the second half without. I just can't get used to it, being amazingly nearsighted doesn't help either, my eyes adjust to the cage, it's hard to "look past"

Our local rink rule is that you don't have to wear one when you're over 18.

I wore a cage for the first time in my life this summer when I broke my jaw and lost some teeth. It totally killed my game. As a poster above said, my eyes adjusted to the bars in close vision rather than anything in far vision. I don't have the patience to get used to it but if they didn't bother me, I'd keep it in a second.

As JR said...USA Hockey only requires you wear a cage under the age of 18...18 and over it's up to you, and the local rink has every right to set it's own policies.

As a parent I wish I could get my own my son wear one, but he has been playing without one since whenever he could get away with it starting at age 16. He has been lucky.....Had one guy in Piha minors (worse than the majors for that) run at his eye with a butt end, but fortunately only caught the corner of his eye, and did not do any bone damage. If you can play wearing one...do it..it's just not worth the risk of serious injury, or a shield at least. I know of at least three players who have had to have major reconstruction in the orbital bone area within the past year due to flying pucks or elbows.

I would honestly have no problems if my local league was to require visors. I probably wouldn't be happy if a full cage was required though.

Mik3: I play league hockey in hotskates in lynbrook, long island.

I can't for the life of me remember the rink i went to in Jersey, as it was like 2 yrs ago. I was looking for a new set of blue labeda pro extremes, and after looking everywhere i found a set in a rink proshop, so i drove down there to pick them up. I can't remember the name of the place. It was only about 40-45 minutes west of new york city. I'm looking all over the net now for the name of it b/c its gonna bug me till i do.

***UPDATE*** found it, inline skating club of america, that was the place

This guy I know plays Junoir B. He says if you still wear a cage and not a 1/2 visor, you get hit more often.

Jr B in-line or ice hockey? I thought you had to be provincial Junior A or higher to wear a half visor (or obviously mens leagues).
