Lacrosse Rib Pads to bridge shoulder pad/ girdle spine protection

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have an opinion on the "best" lacrosse rib pad, to bridge shoulder pad/ girdle spine protection? I am in an XL CCM CL shoulder, and an XL Warrior Dynasty girdle, and the area where these pads meet is not protected at all against cross checking D men trying to shove me away from the goal. I have no interest in the rest of the pad (aside from it being out of my way), it is strictly this spine area that I am concerned with So, I am thinking of one of the following underneath, to bridge this protection and keep my lumbar vertebra happy:

Is this enough?

Is this too much, and will interfere with my pads?

Is there something that I am missing, perhaps a spine piece that I can attach to either my shoulder pads or my pants, that would provide what I want?

Ovi's pants would seem to be perfect, but I am not aware of a company making custom pants with this type of extension.

Both of those look like those would interfere, especially on the sides. The key is to keep the protection in just the place that needs it. I found this set up to work well. Whalepants015_zpsf5d268f2.jpg

My son played box lacrosse and had the STX pad, it will not fit comfortably with hockey equipment; the warrior pad is just almost as bulky. You might want to have a look at the Reebok Black rib protector (TH and HM). It is minimalist and with that I am not sure of it's protective value in hockey. It does cushion stick slashes and cross checks in lax.

I broke 3 lumbar vertebra last year. When I came back to play, I used a football QB rib protector under my shoulders to bridge the gap. It was a little bulky and it turns out I didn't need that much protection, so I switched to the Reebok Black lacrosse rib protector. It's very minimalist. If that's what you are looking for, I think that model is your best bet in lacrosse pads.

Be aware the thing runs really small. So buy the biggest one you can. I'd even think about taking it off the vest and just attaching it to the back of your shoulders with a speedy stitcher. There are extended protectors like the one posted above you could use also. Or maybe even take the back portion off the football flak jacket and attach that. It may be the best option because it's bigger and more protective, but still flexes and bends because it is segmented.

Or harvest the spine or chest pad from a used pair of youth shoulder pads.

I think that's the winner right there. The Youth CCM Ultra Tacks shoulders' chest or spine looks like it would be perfect.

That's been my plan, just haven't gotten around to it yet.

You wanna go halves on these shoulder pads (or a different pair if you see a better option)? I will take either the chest or spine, and you take either the chest or spine? $20 each. I will be back to LA around December 20.

I was actually just thinking I'd harvest one or the other off of my old shoulder pads if I can afford to upgrade--was thinking about the APX2 because I loved the way they felt when I tried them on. If I can do that soon, I'd be happy to give you the other half of my old shoulders. I'm not sure when I'll be back in the States myself though.
