Upgraded steel for speed blade 4.0 holders

Recommended Posts

Does anybody know some upgraded steel I can get for my speed blade 4.0 holders. I bought Reebok 26k skates and they still have the stock steel and holders on them. I thought I read somewhere that different steel will glide faster on the ice and hold the edge longer? Also I was wondering what the stock pitch and profile was on those skates, and if I should try to change it if I get new steel? Thanks

Ccm has the Hyperglide which is suppose to increase glide they also have the Speed Blade Black that has a Titanium Carbo-Nitride finish to give loner edge life and reduce friction. Or you can look at Step Steel that is a high quality Stainless Steel.

I haven't used CCM skates or steel but have heard good things about the higher end Speed Blade steel they have. But with that said I use Step in my skates and love it compared to the stock Tuuk steel.

Hope that helps

I found the stock steel on my RBZs wouldn't hold an edge for more than a session or two. Went with step steel and couldn't be happier.

Could somebody link me to the correct step steel that's sold at Total Hockey, because I could have them profile it there when I get it, and they would put it on my skates for me. So far the only steel that I know for sure that fits my holders is this http://www.totalhockey.com/product/Speed_Blade_Hyperglide_Steel_Runners/itm/14332-41/?mtx_id=0

Not sure if that's the best choice or not. This is my first pair of ice skates so I know nothing about what steel is the best and profile and pitch on them. I got them sharpened from 1/2 roh to 5/8" roh a couple weeks ago and it's hard to explain, but I liked how I felt like I was more on top of the ice, but it still feels like people are gliding faster then me, even though it seems like I'm working harder.

How about these http://www.totalhockey.com/product/Black_ST_Pro_Steel_Runners/itm/15622-2/?mtx_id=0

They look similar. Is there a difference going to the black ones? I'm a machinist, so I know the difference going from carbon steel to stainless steel so I for sure want the good consistently hardened through the whole thing stainless steel, but I guess black will mostly be for looks unless there is a coating on it. I'm thinking the gliding issue could be just because of the cheaper stock carbon steel I have. It's not that I'm really slow, just people glide a little bit faster then me.

I'm not sure on the fit as I don't use CCM, maybe give them a call or you can ask them right on that page of the steel. There is a coating on the black steel http://stepskates.com/blades/black-steel/

I'm not much help for your glide issue, but the 5/8 hollow you switched to should help and better steel as well. From what I understand about profiles a longer profile helps increase speed so I assume it would increase glide. Last I heard CCM steel had a 10ft radius, you can get your LHS to check to your steel for its current profile and maybe try increasing to 11ft, but your going to loose out on some agility and quick movement. Try that with your current steel before buying new stuff and wasting steel experimenting. Maybe some else here can help add some more insight or correct me if I'm wrong.

I think this is Step steel for the Speed Blade holder it doesn't say but it is called the Hyper Glide, http://www.totalhockey.com/product/Hyperglide_ST_Steel/itm/15624-2/?mtx_id=0

As for your glide issue I'm not much help there.

That is the Step that fits in the SB 4.0 holder. Comes in regular, Velocity(polished) and Black (polished/DLC coated)

I looked at the specs on my skates and apparently the steel that it comes with is stainless, but I still think I want to go with some black step steel and see if it makes a difference. Thanks

Is the SB black any better at edge retention than than the stock SB Stainless or Hyperglide runners?

If you go with the polished or coated it should be. Like I said, I'm a machinist and although it's totally different, when I buy the coated cutting tools that I use for cutting metal to do my job they last longer then the ones that aren't coated. Plus I doubt the stock steel is polished either like the other step steel.

I played again tonight at a pick up game and I'm getting quicker, I just want to give myself every advantage I can get. Even though my skates aren't the most expensive I bet the better steel will help me.

They must have just started selling these. I didn't see them when I looked a week or two ago. http://www.totalhockey.com/product/Speed_Blade_Black_Steel_Runners/itm/17553-41/?mtx_id=0

Do you guys think there's a big difference between that and the step steel st pro black?http://www.totalhockey.com/product/Black_ST_Pro_Steel_Runners/itm/15622-2/?mtx_id=0

I have Step for my SB 4.0 holder and it's way too chunky in the toes and heels, so I took them off and trying to get rid of them. I have two pairs of pro stock CCM skates and I like the steel on those, which is even fifferent to stock steel. Two friends of mine have retail skates and their steel is different than mine, the heels are chunky on theirs as well. Been trying to find a few more sets of just the pro stock steel that's on both my TACKS and RBZ.

The ST-Pro steel is made for the E-Pro and Prolite 3 holders.

That's weird. I asked them right on that page I linked to and they said it works in my speedblade 4.0 holders.

So you think it's heavier then the stock steel. Maybe if I just get that CCM black steel it will be about the same weight. Cheaper anyway.

Step makes a ST-ProZ which is compatible with the SB4.0 holder. The ST-Pro will only fit Prolite3/E-Pro contrary to what Total Hockey may tell you.
