Whippy Sticks...Am I missing something?

Recommended Posts

I took a leave for a bit. One pieces were just gaining popularity and intermediate sticks were far and few between when I check out. I come back and have to say "dang things have changed." My back ground was with aluminums and wood. 100 flexes were the norm. I am not very tall so I have to chop a good bit off a senior stick. I have been playing around with OPS and tried some intermediate sticks. Still chop a couple inches off them. I have been opting for an intermediate stick in the 70 flex. Recently I needed a stick and picked up a senior in 90flex range. I chopped a good 8-9 inches off it. They guys as well as my self noticed my shot was harder. Mostly wrist shots and snap shops with occasional shot form the point. I get it if it aint broke don't fix it. As I get older I am just curious about stuff. What am I missing? Is there a different technique to these sticks?

When you cut a stick the flex will go up.

In General

Higher flex is more accurate

Lower flex has more velocity but accuracy is compromised.

Higher flex can get off the hardest shot possible when used by a strong player (i.e. not myself). A player should be using a stick with a flex that they can load to get off the best shot possible. I honestly just don't have the upper body strength to load a stick higher than an 85 flex effectively, hence I've experimented in the 60-85 range

Not sure where you came up with those generalizations.

That's exactly the case. If you are just throwing your hands as fast as you can to shoot, a stiffer stick may be better because it won't have any lag. If you are loading the stick and timing your motion to the release of the stick, you can generally get more kick at a given flex, but you have to work with the stick to get those results.
