shaft Flexxiness

Recommended Posts

Looking for input here.

My Boy Plays Warrior Sticks and the one thing I like about them.  Is they seem to have a nice flexxiness that I do not see with other sticks.  More so with his covert stick.

Anyone have any comparison between Warrior and Say True or Sherwood???

I find on my 2 pc stick I like the Warrior better than my Sherwood T90 or Reebok Ribcore 28K (ops).  You can lean into the stick and not feel like it gonna break.

Looking for other input...I have no local hockey store and am wondering about a True A6.0 shaft, or looking at a Rekker Stick from SWD.

Nothing specific to those brands/sticks to add, but a question... are you comparing sticks with the same flex ratings?  I'm sure in practice there are plenty of variables, but in theory flex should be flex.  I believe it is based on how many pounds of force are required to bend the shaft 1 inch from straight.  So in theory a 65 flex from Warrior should be just as flexy as a 65 flex from Bauer or whomever.  That's all I got.

I get what you are saying...yes and no.  I have had sticks with same flex rating and the reebok is stiffer (less flexy).  I have my kids sticks and his shafts 55 & 70) feel stiffer than my sr. 75.

Problem is i' very seen Bauer shafts with flex fracture lines along shaft.

Do I have an actual shaft deflection board??? No.

All flexes are definitely not created equal, even within shafts/ sticks within the same manufacturer, and even within the same lines of each manufacturer (ie- True A series).

Warrior Flex experience (Dynasty vs. Covert)- I exchanged dialogue with Keith from Warrior, and he said that with the Covert line, the Dagger Taper lower portion of the shaft is intentionally whippier to allow the player to rip quick, hard shots off. So, he told me to +10 in flex (so, if I usually use 90 flex, then go to 100 in the Covert) so that stick handling did not get messed up due to the lower shaft whippiness. I have a OPS 100 flex QR Pro that I whip shots off of, no problem, without loading it. (Sidenote: This stick is 1.5 years old, still going strong, even though I have smashed the blade on so many clappers in warmups. I am not crazy about the puck feel, and expect the stick to break soon anyway, and I will be trying something else when it does.) However, I also have a 2 piece set up with 100 flex Dynasty shaft, and this shaft requires me to really load it to get shots off. Is this due to the said Covert whippiness, and/or the fact that it is a 2 piece setup? Likely, both.

Bauer Vapor (shaft only) I also have a 102 flex Vapor 1X shaft, in a 2 piece setup, and I really have to load it up to make it work (which sort defeats the purpose of having q quick release/ low kick stick). I just use it when I play D, since the super stiffness is good for getting the best of all of the stick collisions.

Reebok is known to be stiffer flex, when compared to other brands (no experience with Reebok, I just hear it time and time again so I figure it to be true).

With True (the first round of the A line, not the A-SBP line), I was told that with the A6.0 and A5.2, due to the upper portion being whippy to allow the top hand to snap the stick, again, +10 in flex rating. However, the A4.5, I was told plays standard in flex, so even within the True line, flex does not always equal flex. I have been using an 85 flex True A4.5 in the 2 piece set up, and I find that it loads and releases similarly to my 100 flex Warrior Covert QR Pro 1 pice. The True does not fire shots as quickly, as the flex is higher up on the shaft, and it is heavier, and 2 piece, but I feel that I can be more accurate with it (maybe because it is newer, or because the release is not quite as fast, I get that extra split second to aim my shot where I want it to go).

Cosmic..thanks for the info...I remember when playing with wood and how stiff they where...the 1st transition to graphite felt weird and I thought I was gonna snap them...but that was from how they used to flex or not flex.  A warrior really flexs different than any other stick to me.  I will not bother with Bauer any more as I had a nexus with a series of stress cracks along the shaft.

I have an ballistic 80 flex shaft that is a pole.  Definitely use that in hack and slash games and the t90  boast "true technology" so am quite sure Sherwood sticks are/where made by True.  My t90  is stiffer than I like.

I cannot flex them without thinking...I'm gonna hear some snap crackle pop.

So I saw this online today...

Quote

''The older you get, the more flex you want,'' Coyotes 39-year-old captain Shane Doan said. ''My elbows and wrists get sore when you get too stiff of a stick. It's kind of like golf: The older you get, the more whippy of a shaft you need.''

I am older (47) so I know I dont need to be trying to flex steel, but want some extra whip to get me more speed  on shots.

2 piece sticks don't have nearly as much as an advantage of 1 piece sticks in terms of flex profile due the the huge knot of materials at the connection point.  The real beauty of the TRUE line is that they use Axenic Technology in every stick they make.  SR / Int / Jr / Yth through every price point.

Zac,  Thanks for the input.

True is on my radar, they are the only company making a shaft in 75 flex for both std and taper configurations.

I like what I've read about what your process for manufacture is and I have a strong following with true Temper and Grafalloy from golf for 20+ years.

My boy has primarily played Warrior, But that was because they had the shafts that worked with him as a squirt.  He also does have a warrior 1pc Covert.  I really like how that stick performs for him...BUT I am also looking at the 2 pc set-up as it works great as a back-up, to study curve options and even for installing a street blade into a stick that he is most familiar with.

I know when games get a little crazy with stick checking and slashing, he usually switches over to the 2 pc.

My biggest problem is getting the curves that I like or think he wants to work with or try out.

I know a few guys that have gone to lighter flexes to lessen shoulder and/or elbow problems with stiffer flexes. If I were in a competition for slapshot power, I would use a 100 flex. Since I'm not, an 85 works just fine.

I don't do many clappers...maybe thats why I like some whip to give me some additional velocity (who knows)

this was the article I had read

I know with golfclubs there is just a certain FEEL that I look for in golfclubs and can identify what does not feel good when swinging certain clubs

For most people, the swing weight is the biggest factor in that kind of feel.
