Dropped new gloves into a puddle... need help!

Recommended Posts

Last week I bought a brand new pair Warrior QR1 gloves, my first really good pair of gloves and I've been wearing them around everywhere to the point where I feel like they're finally broken in!  However when I was carrying them out of my car, I dropped one of them into a puddle and now it stinks!  The good news is that the palms did not get wet but only the protective back.

Anyway I can fix this problem?  I tried wiping the back with some soap water and even freezing them and using febreeze.... however I realize the dirty water probably soaked a little into the foams beyond the plastic inserts.... :( Help please!

I know it's not recommended, but you can wash them in a side-loading washing machine on low tumble. Or you can soak them in a hot bath with some Oxy Clean for an hour.

Thanks! Would this ruin the palms?

Since they're still new, you should be fine. I've washed mine in a low-tumble side loading washing machine and they were came out fine. Just make sure they're completely dry before using them (air dry inside your place or you can speed up the process and use a fan).

I DO NOT RECOMMEND USING A TOP LOADER. The fins on the spinner can chew through your gloves! If you HAVE to use a top loader, then place it inside a pillow sheet.

Just FYI I wouldn't use any heat to dry them. MC is right that a fan will do it, but cold air not warm. I've found that it'll dry out the palm.

When washing gear this is what I do.

Front Commercial Washer.

I usually use hot for older gear but since yours are new, go cold.

Box of Baking Soda

1 qt White Vinegar

Some detergent (not too much).

Regular wash.

If they are still dripping wet you can put them in the dryer on no heat for a cycle.

Hot water may ruin screened logos. I found out the hard way on a pair of Eagles. Be careful.

No, a front loader or soaking them should not ruin the palms. these things are designed to get wet and take some abuse. For what you want to do I'd be soaking the glove in some water in a bucket with some oxyclean or similar neutral, non caustic, very environmentally friendly detergent. Overnight should do the trick then rinse them well under running water and hang them fingers up in a warm place to dry (not in direct sunlight). It will take a day to dry out, if you are worried about moisture remaining in the foam pads in the fingers and the back of the hand then put the glove in the early morning or late afternoon sun but make sure direct sunlight does not get on the palm.

I use a front loader for mine as well. No issues at all. Just don't use the dryer ;)

For what it's worth, I use oxyclean in a whirlpool bathtub for my goalie gloves which tend to get a whole lot more stinky than my player gloves.

There's a shoe cleaner company called Jason Markk that I've never used on gloves, but have used on tons of different pairs of shoes - canvas, mesh, nylon, leather, etc. For $16 it may not be a bad option!
