Do you cut padding out of your pants?

Recommended Posts

Hi all. Just wondering if any of my fellow players cut any pads out of their hockey pants to get a better fit? I've seen some guys cut out padding from the hips, tailbone, excess thigh padding, belly guards etc. I never thought I'd consider cutting pant padding out but after recently buying some 1N's I had fitting issues that I've never had before.

To be clear, I carry a beer keg on me while I play. As a result I find that my gut makes the "belly guard" flop/poke out on pretty much every pant I've owned. Because the guard on the 1N is fairly big I found that I didn't like the way it looked/felt so was looking at ways to fix it and make more comfortable. I wanted to keep the padding that the front pant lacing went through for some extra protection.

  1. I tried folding the guard over itself so that it sits under the belt - This worked but made the padding essentially double thickness. With the belt done up to stop the pants from falling down I found it uncomfortable and restricted breathing.
  2. I tried folding the base of the guard so that it didn't sit up so high - This worked as well but resulted in a (larger than usual ;p ) bludge in the groin area.
  3. I could shorten its length by half.
  4. Add some elastic straps to top of belly pad to the hip pads - Aim would be to keep it flush against stomach

I ended up just cutting it out all together. I found this made an immediate improvement to the overall fit and feel. Not sure how I feel about not having the belly padding there anymore though..

What are other peoples stories/reasoning for cutting padding out of pants?

It's funny you ask this question. I have Supreme One.90 pants, which fit like the modern day Nexus pants. The belly guard does the same thing on my pants. I'm 198 pounds, 5 ft 9, wearing large pants. The pants are pulled up high with no suspenders, so the belt strap is pretty damn tight. I've been thinking about remove the top as well but have learned to just ignore it. The top folds over as I get going from sweat, but now I may revisit removing the top and speedy stitching the top closed. Thanks for the thought here.

I do the same thing but for opposite reasons. I'm a tall, thin guy, and in order to get pants that fit length-wise, i often have to make sure they're snug (but not too snug) around the waist. Often times I end up cutting out the belly pad because it becomes too restrictive when I skate. Pants/girdle are the thing I need to modify the most due to my build, I generally need to buy a large for the length but then end up sewing or modifying velcro so that pieces fit as intended.

Speedy stitcher is the best! Let me know how it goes if you end up doing it. Cutting it in half and sewing it back in is my next choice if I end up not liking having nothing there at all. Pretty easy to put the belly pad back in so no issue with trying it out.

I may try getting my hands on an old belly pad or some donor protective gear, cutting it to size and trialling it before I cut up the original pad. Just in case I try to move these pants on at some stage.

I cut out the plastic in the hanging upper leg guards in my Tacklas. They were just getting in the way when I was in full knee-bend. There's still a lot of padding there without the plastic.

I've always had the same problem with my Nexus/One95 belly pad.  Just kinda live with it.  Was thinking of elastic but never got around to it.

Same. Elastic would have been perfect. Ended up just lacing it up, folding the "flap" down, and putting the belt over it to hold it down.

I kept the pants fairly loose though with suspenders.

I'm trying this in tomorrow's game. I looked into cutting it, but the loop for the top of the laces is so close to the fold, that I'd be in some dangerous territory.

Yea, it works out okay. I tried using a girdle thinking something wrapped tight might actually work better but no... the waist strap is in totally the wrong place.

Bit of a thread necro here but I wanted to update.

I've been playing with the belly guard cut out for a few weeks now and found it a bit uncomfortable due to the belt/buckle digging in a bit. I fitted some suspenders so that I could have the belt really loose and that seems to have done the trick for now.

I'm constantly on and off with using suspenders so If I end up ditching them I'll be going either the elastic route or cutting the belly pad in half and sewing it back in (so that it covers where the belt buckle is).
