Want to buy an ice rink?

Recommended Posts

i thought that was the rink, Medford Ice Rink, in New Jersey...I just played there a few weeks ago, it's an okay rink, but had lots of problems. The Zamboni broke down multiple times, and caught on fire a few years ago, and that had to be replaced. the local travel team, the medford wild, played there, and parents were getting very frustrated when it was getting towards the end of the season and they didn't have their normal uniforms. they had to use old ugly nashville 3rd jerseys. when i was there, i think that there was a total of two employees, the snack bar, and the zamboni driver, otherwise everything was dead in there. the pro shop was closed, during the middle of the day, so the owner of it basically said, were not making money, so i think ill close the rink and lockout all of the kids who skate here. so he puts it up on ebay.....

Yeah I know a lot of people who lost big money because their kids now have no where to play or practice. Plus people signed up for lessons in the spring all lost their money. It's a bad situation for all involved and I don't see anyone picking it up unless they have some serious plans. It's almost impossible around here to keep a one sheet rink open.

The rink itself was essentially a dump, but the Wild organization was full of nice and generous people. The zamboni didn't actually catch on fire, it started to steam for one reason or another, called the FD, they assumed it was an eletrical fire and cut the wires, leaving them out a zamboni that otherwise would have just needed some maintence. There is a lot more to it, why the owner had to close and sell. It closed because it had no Zamboni, compressor needed couple of grand fixin, not because they weren't making money. Almost any owner of a small town ice rink will tell you NOT to open up that sort of business if you are looking to profit. Most owners around here aren't in it for the money, just to provide a local ice rink, and they'll be the first to say that.

On the property I'm sure they could fit it but they'd obviously have to extend the building and get permits and all that... the Igloo is a new two sheet rink about 15 minutes down on the same road and I heard they may buy Medford as their "third" sheet.

There is room on the property as Ratfinklives stated, but as he also stated, it pretty much be a stupid financial decision. If you're serious about an ice rink in the same area, even for same organization, you're best bet is to tear it down, and rebuild a rink with the two sheets. Medford lost a lot of money to High Ridge, where the figure skating has basically kept them in busisness.

As for a buyer for Medford, I've hear everything from a Flyer buying it to the owner of a Mortgage Co.

As I understand it, that's where the Flyers were skating since they aren't allowed at the skate zone.

The Flyers were skating there, but now maybe they'll go to the igloo...but hey Ratfink, why is Highridge close to closing?? do they even have a proshop anymore, cuz Powerplay was theirs?? and it closed

I remember seeing Fridge and some guys at Medford a while back. But, if I recall correctly, Primeau reserved ice slots every week, not sure for what...

As for High Ridge, I wasn't aware that others knew. From the brief convo I had with Mrs. Hughes, they are closing sometime in March unless they do find a buyer. Another example that the 1 sheet doesn't cut it anymore.

*Oh, and as for the proshop.... Powerplay went under recently as well.....the actual pro shop at the rink is barely good for a decent sharpening and a few rolls of tape, unless you're into vintage hockey sticks and figure skates.

2.7 million is just the starting price, the reserve hasn't even been yet met. If that entire facility sold for 2.7 million, that would be a STEAL! I'm willing to bet the reserve price is a lot higher especially considering it's a relatively new facility only 7 years old.

Does anyone know where the Isles or Devils are in relation to this rink?

I'm almost positive the Isles have no connection to the rink...keith primeau reserved time there for himand a handful of other former and current Flyers, becuase they couldn't get to the Skate Zone, but now our local papers are saying that they are now playing at the Skate Zone, where they originally weren't alloweed to play

The description says $3.6M. And if I was interested at all, I would have looked into buying the AC SkateZone last year instead, and renamed it the Mod Squad Gardens (or should it be swamp?).

Of course the Isles have no connection to the rink, he was just asking for a reference. Primeau did not reserve time at Medford, he reserved time at FSZ. As for not being able to play at SZ, that is why Fridge and some guys played at Medford real early in the lockout. But, you see Flyers in Voorhees all the time, maybe not playing, but...

I assumed the 3.6 was what it would come out to after you put some money to fix everything and get it running again.

Name for AC would have to be associated with AC, like the Mod Squad Spades, or something...
