Blade Holder For Graf G-35

Recommended Posts

I am purchasing the Graf G-35, but don't want the t-blade system. Thus, I can put on any holder I want. Should I go with the Cobra, the TUUK, the Vector, or some other?

What do you think?

What holders have you skated on before?

Which one did you like?

It's all PP and if you like one holder over the other, go for that one.

I like Lightspeeds...but maybe you hate them?

Plus, Lightspeeds look awesome on G-35's, and good call on the t'blades ;)

yah its all pp. Like me personaly i would put on Prolite3's, because i like the feel i get of the ice with them. But i think ccm is getting rid of them so that sucks for me. But yah, its all pp

I had the Mission Pitch Holders installed on my G35's. JR profiled them to 9' so that they are very similar to Tuuk Custom Plus Holders.

Guys, you are the best. As a hockey equipment nut, I stumbled upon this website. I can't believe the sense of community and willingness to help. Plus, the level of knowledge is incredible.

I have one follow-up question. I'm leaning toward the lightspeeds for my Graf G-35's. Can I put Bauer steel in them that does not come with the holes? I hate the holes. You get very few sharpenings, plus they are really prone to breaking.

Riggo -

Yes. You can put non-perf steel on those.

However, I suggest you get a qualified person to do that swap. I am, and I struggled at times to do Mojo122's, due to insole delamination. Where are you located? Good luck.

JR-

I live in the Boston area.

I'm a little fanatical about my son's skates. I drive up to Thorold, Ontario (9 hours)each year to buy skates and get them profiled/contoured.

I really like the Graf boot, but have been dissatisfied with the Cobra holder and I think the steel is substandard (a little soft). The single screw is a great concept, but is always coming loose.

Here is my dilemma: I like the lightspeed holder with the perforated steel. My understanding is the steel is laser cut and superior to the non-perf. However, the steel is a pain to replace. With regular sharpenings, I might need to change the steel 3 or 4 times a year. That means giving them to some guy (maybe a kid) I don't know or trust, to pull off the holder, change the steel, and slap the holder back on. I get real nervous when I turn over a pair of skates to some unknown party in the back room. Who knows what happens to the original alignment when the holder is slapped back on.

An alternative is to get the non-perf. lighspeed blade which means sacrificing on the quality of the steel. Plus, I would still need to change the steel, but less often.

An alternative is to put the Vector mount on the Graf. At least you can change the steel without messing with the mount. Any thoughts on the Vector holder? My understanding is the Vector holder and steel is superior to to the Prolite.

So my dilemma is, how do I get the best holder and steel without running the risk that each time I change the steel, I run the risk of someone mismounting the holder which was put on by an expert who is not down the street.

Maybe you have some other thoughts to my dilemma.

Incidentally, JR, where are you located?

Perf and non-perf is the same steel.

You can always go PITCH like I did for mojo122, who, incidentally, lives in Boston too. He shipped them down to me.

If I were to do LS for you I will drill a hole in the outsole so that you can access the LS bolt.

I've been skating on the PITCH holders/steel for a couple of months now. I'm extremely happy I went with them instead of the Tuuk Custom Plus. The steel seems to hold an edge longer, and doesn't get nicked up as much. As for JR's workmanship, absolutely top notch. I'd highly recommend shipping them down to JR regardless of the holders you plan on installing.

Where is JR located? Name of his shop?

I don't know if this is going through the shop or if he is just doing it on the side. JR works for RDV sportsplex in Orlando.

JR, I like that you can think out of the box. Your idea about drilling the hole in the outsole is a great one. My understanding (please correct me if I'm wrong) is that you would drill a hole through the heel at a 45 degree angle so you could acees the bolt. Would you need to fill in the hole with something when you are done? Wouldn't the pressure on the heel with the hole cause some discomfort unless it was filled in?

Nah, doesn't have to be done at an angle. Just right between the copper and last steel rivet...it'll be the same size as the one on Bauer skates. It won't affect the strength of the outsole, you won't feel it, as it is about the size of a nickel and you don't need to plug it, although you can put a cap from a Bauer skate on it.

JR-

Once again, you are way over my head (which is great).

Are you to say that this hole is already on the Bauer skate and they have a cap to fit over it? Or is this cap some type of aftermarket product?

Thanks for staying outside the box. You're the best.

Bauer skates come with a hole pre-drilled in the sole to access the screw. They put a plastic cap over the hole.

Yea, on all Bauer skates with Lightspeeds there is already a hole with a plug in it to access the bolt, which is what JR would do for you. Bauer skates have the cap over the hole, but I don't really see the need for a cap, as long as the insole is in the skate while you use it (don't know why it wouldn't be...).
