vivaotravez12 0 Report post Posted February 18, 2005 I need a Laptop, never had one, so advice wouldn't hurt. Need an economically smart computer. Nothing with 200 trilloion giga wiga bytes of gaming space, or somtehing like that. I need it to be able to have Word, maybe excel and/or powerpoint, a CDR Drive, floppy and USB port. Enough space for a few downloads like poker, aim, and whatnot. I need the internet too. I have DSL here at home. What else do I need for the internet. Routter or something? How does that all work. Quicker response the better. Thanks
Thockey17 1 Report post Posted February 18, 2005 Dell makes some killer notebooks for the price. I'd take a look at the Inspiron line. They have alot of deals to double memory or ram, sometimes even both.

Chadd 916 Report post Posted February 18, 2005 Get as much RAM as you can afford, second should be the processor. If you use DSL at home like I do, you should already have a router. If not a wired/wireless router is a must. Being able to work in any room with the wireless connection makes it convenient. If you aren't going to go with a larger brand like Dell or Toshiba, I'd make sure I got it from a local shop so they can handle any repair issues you may have. vivaotravez12 0 Report post Posted February 18, 2005 Yes, I have a router right next to me. How will I be able to access tee internet from the laptop and a wirelsess card. Can anyone explain that? I was thinking either Toshiba or Compaq for brands. Not sure where I'll get it yet. eBay has some killer prices, and some have some sort of guarantees or security with waranties. mickz 107 Report post Posted February 19, 2005 I've been trying to get a Laptop on eBay for about a month now. If you're only using it for applications like Excel, I'd just go for something Pentium III 700mhz and up. 128mb of RAM is what I'd consider the bare minimum. I really like Dell, and HP-Compaq. If you're downloading alot, a 10GB Hard drive would be a good start. If you do buy something on eBay, stay away from the older ones as they don't have USB ports. As for the router, buy it only if you need it. I have one myself because I have 3 computers at home but my ISP only allows 2 MAC addresses so I have to use a router for all three. Your router has to be a wireless router in order for your laptop to use its wireless card to go online. If not, you have to buy a separate card which connects your router and laptop by LAN cable. SLy MaLLone 0 Report post Posted February 21, 2005 I just bought a Sager a while ago. Someone here recommended them. The only problem I have had is that I spilled some soda on the keyboard and a few keys stopped working, but I called them up and had a new one within a couple days. Here. Guest Marcelo Cordoba Report post Posted February 21, 2005 I just bought a Sager a while ago. Someone here recommended them. The only problem I have had is that I spilled some soda on the keyboard and a few keys stopped working, but I called them up and had a new one within a couple days. Here. I am now on my second SAGER and love it! If you are coming from a desktop system where you use 10-key, SAGER has the comps for you.Fortunately for me, I live near SAGER and have always been able to go pick up my comps, or, in the one time I needed assistance from there, drove there to get fantastic customer service. They are a bit on the pricey side for the lower end models, so, if you aren't looking for a sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet 17" widescreen, you may want to try other brands. My fiance and I were given a Toshiba for XMAS, but, we both have had bad luck with Toshiba in the past, so, we traded it back to CompUSA for a Sony K37 which she uses to run our businesses. She loves it (although I would have preferred a Fujitsu or Sager).

The PB would probably be to much computer for his needs. Although the iBook G4 in the 14' is dead sexy. You won't be disapointed.

No viruses or spyware, what can be better, join the cult Wow, that be a major plus if no viruses or spyware are able to get on Apples. Can you explain why that is? Only think with Apple is I've always heard you need different programs and cannot download the same things you would on a regular CPU. I'm still in the market, but interest has tapered off as of late until a family concern is cleared up.
