NHL draft?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering today.. If the NHL and the NHLPA agree to a new CBA before may, how will the NHL draft go? How will the order be? Will they give the capitals the #1 pick again or what? It would be ridiculous for them to get the #1 draft pick in back to back years for just being idle for a year. Then they would likely have Ovechkin and Crosby on their roster for next year, that would almost be unfair. Does anyone know how theyll do this? It's a burning question ive been thinking about for a few days now.

When Bettman was on the radio here he said when the board of governors meet they'll figure it out, but it won't be just a repeat order from last year. BUT, with no CBA, there is a loophole that IMG is trying to get Crosby into that would keep him from having to be drafted, making him a free agent.

They don't know yet. I would assume that they would have another lottery. The big question is if they will include all of the teams or just the ones who missed the playoffs last time.

With how much I'm sure the league doesn't want Crosby to end up in Pittsburgh or Nashville, I wouldn't be surprised if they included all the teams. But giving the worse teams more "ping pong balls", which can be fixed anyway.

That is what I thought, too. If the draftees did find a loophole and were able to become free agents, it would be very ironic. The owners are trying to make things more "fair" for the smaller market teams by trying to get a cap, revenue sharing, ect., and as a result- the lockout. Take Crosby for example, the first overall pick. That pick has always gone to one of the bottom teams in the league, one of the teams who would receive great help from a cap and revenue sharing. As a free agent, he'd be able to go to the team who offered him the best contract, most likely not one of the teams who needs help, but rather a large market team. So the small market teams, the ones who all had a pretty decent chance at getting the first overall pick now have little to no chance to get Crosby. I've always thought that Crosby in a Rangers sweater would be good for the NHL (assuming there will still be one).

Right, I was talking about if they work out a CBA before may. They said may is when they would need to reach a new CBA if they wanted to have a draft this year. This is all hypothetically, because we dont know if/when this new CBA will be agreed upon.

Yeah, even though I'm a penguins fan, and I'm sure they would have been in the running for him. I'd rather him go to an original 6 team, or at least a team that can afford him. It'd piss me off having him for 3-4 years then losing him rather than just never having him at all.

Me too :D

Honestly though, Assuming he panned out, it would probably be better then all of the experiments done in the past 13 years trying to market the game to people who will never buy into the overall experience. Crosby in NY would be great for the game.

Hell, I'd love to see crosby in New Jersey. :D What a nice gift that would be when the NHL comes back. A new arena(THANK GOD) and a Sidney Crosby as the face of the franchise.

eh, the devils would fall into another one of those teams that wouldn't bring crosby back. they'd make some excuse like extending a 38 year old brodeur's contract was more important, then give the same money two years later to some mediocre player at the end of their line.

haha...What a waste of talent if he went to NJ..No offense. :)

Awww come on now Theo. Better he end up there than somewhere that he may end up like Brendl, Lundmark, Dube or Malhotra,

I'm sure the league will try to push him towards toronto, montreal, or new york. if not those three, the remaining out of the original 6 would probably be next in line.

I hope the Leafs, Wings, Avs, Rangers, and Flyers get the top five picks.

Or they could always end up buying more talent

According to Eklund over at his blog:

From a source: "There will be much talk at the BOG meeting March1, but most in the know are leaning towards a completely random draft, with every team getting an equal shot at #1"

How reliable is this source? Probably not very reliable at all, but who knows.

There are a lot of junior guys who have been drafted but don't have NHL contracts so they will go back into the draft pool. When the NHL and NHLPA figure it all out it could make for the depest draft pool of a long while.

which means it's as reliable as any of the others we have seen.......

IMO, they should take every teams overall record over the last 5 or so years and do a lottery based on those standings. This way teams that have been bad or mediocre for a long time would benifit while teams that dominate year to year would still end up with a late pick.

I like that idea. add up wins and losses over the last five years and then weight the system based on that winning percentage
