Jobs Lost to Lockout

Recommended Posts

I just feel so bad for the people who relied on the NHL to pay their rent. The concession stand workers and such.

The players, coaches, GM's and owners can easily live off of their money for the next 5-10 years and not have a problem

In Minnesota the area around the arena has really been struggling because of the lack of hockey. Theres even the threat of a couple closing becasue of no hockey. Even the city of St. Paul is feeling it, they are losing around $200,000 this year because of some sort of half-percent tax they worked out with the Wild.

All of the hockey stores around here (South Florida) are hurting BAD.

I'm good friends with one of the owners of a local shop and he said he made only $300 last week. :(

If I worked for the league and got laid off, I'd be so pissed off. I hope they get good workers comp., it isn't fair that they are without jobs because their employers are vags.

Damn...

I haven't experienced any drop in sales. $300 for an entire week is sad.

Factor in all the restaurants/pubs that lose business from people going to games; ushers and other arena workers missing out on the games/promotional events and it's an assfest.

Downtown here used to be nice on the nights a Predley game was on but now it's just dead. No one at Sweet Eddie George's complaining about the womanly techno playing....*sniff*

I recall a story about a guy in Detroit losing his house since he wasn't working as a vendor at the Joe.

No NHL = no draft. Canadian CHL gets a lot of its operating money from drafted players. I noticed the QMJHL has cancelled it US showcase this spring. This is affecting high school hockey players in a very negative way!

My friend works at the Marriot that shares parking lots with the nassau coliseum. They're restaurants and bars rely mainly on pre-and post-game business. Also, they house every visiting team and even some of the islanders who live there during the season. A lot of the waiters, waitresses, and others in "smaller" positions have been hurt badly.

Don't forget also, a lot of people/businesses are involved in marketing and promotions. I'm a graphic designer, and I know the firms responsible for their marketing are suffering as well. It unbelievable how far-reaching the effects are. Stuff most people don't even know about. I feel for everyone who is hurt.

The $2.1 B declared earnings from 2003/2004 does not represent the total cash flow generated from the season's games....the derivative earnings....ie from concessions, from travel/entertainment/food/beverage and other "off property" revenues, could well be at least equal to from half to even double the actual declared NHL earnings.

To get a sense of what this is...add up all the fringe costs of going to an NHL game...and compare this to the actual ticket prices plus concessions(where many teams participate in concession earnings), to get a sense of how much this is. Include dinner and drinks afterwards etc, rental car, taxi, parking, hotel, airfare etc.etc....Of course televison earnings also inflate the NHL totals as well.

If my assumptions are correct, then when you extract these "off propety" earnings from each Arena region affected by the lockout, and you get a sense of what impact this could have. If it was half, or $1.05B, the "average" game related cash injection into a local arena economy, would be in the order of $35,000,000 per arena region/year. Obviously this "average" would fluctuate a lot from region to region, but you can get a sense of the order of magnitude of the impact.

If it was as high as double the amount actually earned by the NHL, then this impact could skyrocket to a $105,000,000 per region "average"....Even in the best case where it's only $35 m., it is still a significant impact when removed.

Which firm do you work for illpaseo?

Right now I'm working at Aquent in New York city. It's a freelance agency. I just started a freelance job with citibank in NYC. I should be working over there for a few months. I would LOVE to get a job designing in the hockey industry, but I don't think any of the companies have offices in NYC, none that I know of anyways...

mde began to hit the nail on the head. this is effecting so many more people then the league imagined... or the players for that matter. I can appreciate both side's arguements, but i have no respect for their actions. the owners screwed themselves by letting the league get this way, and the players have become too comfortable with the current salaries.

the fact that these players are complaining about a million here and there, shows that many of them aren't concerned with whats going on around the hockey world... and i will say the same for the owners... chad mentioned someone in detroit losing their house, being from the area, i have heard numerous stories of the arena staff, or that of olympia entertainment having to sell their houses, some simply being evicted, and being forced to live on the street. if the owners cared, they could support at least some of the people that make their organizations run, when there is a game.

this effect the entire community surrounding each nhl arena... take away 41 days of revenues for the people that mde mentioned, and add in some others... those are the people that this hurts... not the owners, or the players.

get real boys... think of somebody other then yourselves for a change!!!
