Guitar for a Beginer

Recommended Posts

So im interested in buying a guitar to learn on but I dont have any idea of what kind is good. Ive looked at some of the beginers packs that comes with a guitar, amp and a bunch more and those look like a good deal. I need something affordable but that is not a piece of junk either. Any input would be appreciated.

are you interested in playing with a band?

a squier is an affordable and good guitar for a beginner. i don't believe in buying beginner packs, because while it does supply you with a tuner and extra strings, the amo included is tiny and overpriced. any pawn shop would have plenty of guitar amps, much bigger, for much cheaper.

If you want a Fender, get a Squier.

If you want a Gibson, get an Epiphone.

If you want to rock, get a Jaskson performer series.

If you want something different, get a Schecter.

Buy what ever feels best in your hands, you can always upgrade. Don't be worried about the price, cause anything that involves a guitar is expensive. Do yourself a favor and buy a good amp, I would reccommend a Line 6 or a Fender G-Dec as they both have many effects you can toy with and will sound awesome without pissing off your neighbours.

i have a fender stratocaster special 2 tone sunburst color that i got as my first guitar. i love the guitar, amazing sound, and it's really good looking, and the best part about it was that it was only 149.99 USD, its a pretty good guitar if your looking for one that looks like the more expensive fenders

i have a BC RICH Mockingbird 1976 Vintage NJ Series and it was only $100.00

I had a late 80's NJ series Mockingbird. My first good guitar that I bought with my own money.

Bruin88:

I have a very old Traynor tube combo, from the mid 70s or so and it sounds pretty good.

really anything should do you good because you are begging. its your guitar. if it doesnt work for you later down the road you can upgrade the parts, or get a new axe that fixes the things you didnt like about your first one. if you are going new get the best you can afford. if you are going used make sure it is in good condition, and all the pickups work properly same with the volume and tone nobs and the pickup selector switch, and the neck isnt warped then get it properly set up at your local guitar shop. The best thing you can do is have fun playing your new axe.

Get something good and used, you'll get a better bang for your buck than with a new guitar. Most of guitars you get in the packages are basically plywood.

here's my (probably biased) opinion...

go into some mom & pop type shops and find the store that puts the most effort into helping you find what you need. if they're willing to help you out a lot when you're looking for cheap $100 guitar, that's cool.

if you came into the store i work at, i'd probably suggest a johnson strat for electric, or a cheap kay acoustic - they're not great, but if you're not sure if you're going to stick with it or not, it's not gonna be a big loss if you quit playing in a few months. and you won't "outgrow" it for a while. the kay's are actually real cool for the money - i wanna buy one just to mess around on.

so, if this shop is cool, they should throw some new strings on there for you and set it up (clean fingerboard, polish frets, adjust the neck, check the action, intonation if electric). they should do all that for free cause you bought the guitar, and take care of those again if you have any problems with it. its kind of the equivalent of free skate sharpening if you buy em at a LHS...

in my opinion, they're not worth upgrading after that. a lot of people will swap the single coils that come in those (or squier strats or whatever) for single coil sized humbuckers. i say don't bother, its not worth pumping more money into those. in a couple years, you can sell it to a friend for real cheap, buy something used and overlooked for relatively cheap. i have a USA hamer special P-90 i got for $450...it blows most gibsons away and is a lot cheaper than even the les paul studios.

and then you can get into amps, haha. god i've wasted a lot of money on those...i think i have like 5-6 right now (and the herd is thinned).

that's my opinion. sorry it's so long :]

No, I'll check when I get home. It's a three input tube combo with el84 tubes and on board reverb.

Maybe this one.

thats cool. i like kinda oddball type stuff like that, and i like EL84's...i'm building an 18 watt marshall clone right now actually...

Hamer made some nice stuff, it's a shame they got dissed in the late 90's because they were so popular in the pointy guitar era.

hey chadd - just curious as to what other gear you have?

right now i've got:

Marshall JCM800 2204S (single channel 800, in limited edition small box head with green tolex)

Marshall 1966A (matching green 4x10 cab, basketweave grill cloth)

Blackface Fender Bassman

Silverface Fender Bassman (modified by Billy Zoom of X)

Framus 4x12 With Vintage 30s

Carvin XT112 (X100B "hot rod mod" version, in a combo)

Bassman style 2x12 a customer at my work built for me

That 18 watt Marshall head i'm building

And a craptacular Ampeg 4x12 i can't seem to get rid of.

And a few overdrive pedals...

This stuff is all overkill for me considering i'm not in a band anymore. My gear definitely exceeds my talent :x

I sold all of my other amps. I really miss my Dual recto and my Fender Blues Deluxe, a very nice little amp that wasn't made for long. I had an old '70's Marshall mark II that someone added a master volume to that sounded good.

I still have a couple guitars and some pedals including a first year Vox reissue wah and a Sovtek Big Muff pedal. The real sleeper pedal is the DOD Bifet preamp. a nice little clean boost to your signal to make a tube amp really break up nicely.
