Just wondering what's your best 3 guitarist?? My personal fav is John Petrucci (Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment). In second place is Joe Satriani. (Saw him on concert a couple of years ago, he puts on a great show). My 3rd fav is probably Yngwie Malmsteen, I mean come on, just look at his name and it's mind blowing.

As much as I like Petrucci's playing, not to mention the fact he's a nice guy, most of the stuff is lacking soul. It's fantastic and incredibly technical but there's just something missing. Satriani has it, as did SRV, Eric Johnson and others. My favorite Yngwie disc was Eclipse, it had some stuff on it that wasn't in his favorite key.

I have to say Jimmy Page (in the Led Zep. periode). This guy could write some amazing songs... Damn

I'll probably get slammed for this one, but I don't like Hendrix. I think what made him a guitar god was the fact that he died so early in his career...

I've said the same thing a number of times. Clapton was fantastic and is still creating music in his fifth decade.

It all begins and ends with Thurston Moore and Lee Renaldo for me. Johnny Marr is a great one to throw on any list Ponty. Some other guys outside the obvious choices are J. Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.), Doug Martsch (Built to Spill), Tony Iommi (Sabbath), Robert Smith (The Cure), Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine), Stephen Malkmus (Pavement), John Sykes (Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake)...

No love for the motor city madman? Nugent could lay down some filthy grooves, his rhythm tracks were what made his songs. Big fan of Ty Tabor's tone as well, not bad for a solid state amp.

i really don't like clapton. i think he's highly overrated. i wouldn't say the best, but here is some of my favs: hendrix (just for the sole reason of "machine gun" and "voodoo chile") and ben weinman of the dillinger escape plan (calculating infinity is one of the best heavy/jazz/hardcore albums of all time). i've got others, but those two stick out a lot in my head.

I love the sound of Peter Green when he played with Fleetwood Mac.

Also like the early Santana grooves. It makes you wanna dance and .... more B)

Gilbert is/was great. Last time Mr Big was on tour Ritchie Kotzen was filling in for Gilbert, it wasn't the same.

Ritchie Kotzen is awesome but he's more blues-oriented than the technical Paul Gilbert. Kotzen also didn't fit in too well for Poison temporarily taking C.C. DeVille's place for an album and tour.

For technical guys I think my tops would be Satch, Vai, Van Halen, Eric Johnson, Gilbert, and Malmsteen. Somewhere I have a recording of Gilbert playing a 128th note! I also have a great tape somehere called "Speed Metal Symphony" of Marty Friedman (formerly of Megadeth) and Jason Becker playing together. I believe their collaborative effort was called Cacaphony.

My fav bluesy guys are SRV, Clapton, Kotzen, Blues Saraceno, Warren Haynes/Dickey Betts (formerly of Allman Bros.)

Yes indeed, Cacophony!! Speed Metal Symphony was a great album! Friedman's Dragon's kiss was good as well.

Mike Oldfield is also great, Tubular Bells is pure genious. I have The Tubular Bells II here(not part 2, it's the 2nd cd but with a better version of it), it's just great, listen to it all the time. If you can see one of his concerts on DVD of live, it's perfect, the lighting, the small details just make it more and more genious.

I'm going outside the norm here too, first of all, Brian May is incredible the way he could play. Im a huge, huge fan of East Bay Ray as well (Dead Kennedys) ounk guys arent well known for their guitar playing, but he was an innovator. and Im shocked that im going to be the only one who says the great Chuck Berry, you cant play rock guitar if you cant play Chuck Berry

Chuck did some great stuff and David Gilmour wrote some great hooks and had some really soulful solos. Kim Thayil really had the ultimate "Grunge Tone" 15+ years ago as well.
