Roller hockey or Ice hockey

Recommended Posts

Wow, you've obviously never witnessed a high level roller hockey game. Then again that's understandable when you're 13 years old.

Roller VS Ice discussion always turns into pissing match when it doesn't need to....

Actually, i find them about the same in the stopping/pivoting/turning aspect. Right now i like roller more cause I'm honestly getting a little burned out of the seriousness that everyone takes in ice hockey. Roller to me is more fun because of how open it is. It lets skilled players use their skills unlike ice hockey, and the whole "enforcer" aspect is almost non-existant.

Of course, i am much better at roller hockey than i am at ice, so I'm a little biased.

I've only tried Roller when I lived in Cali a few years back, I didn't like it and haven't given it a shot since. Honestly, its whatever floats your boat, I like ice ten fold more but thats just me.

are u f-ing joking sdcopp?

hockey is done on skates, not wheels. in a sports wher ei can have better bearings than you and be faster is rediculous. The game was made for ice, i dont even associate roller hokcey with ice, it is so inferior.

i only played roller int he past with my buddies. tried competitive it is so bad. the pace is terrible compared to ice.

lets not get into intensity cuz we know who wins that

couldnt agree more

there doesnt seem to be a lot of roller in the good hockey areas of the country, especially New England. Nobody plays it, its all ice.

You should try watching roller in a good area of the country then. Here in St. Louis it is pretty competitive. There are a lot of good players here. In fact some off the better ice players in the area started out playing roller and made the switch. Now they are some off the better ice players that i have seen around the area. I just dont get why everyone looks down on roller. I wear less pads than you guys and i would bet play just as hard. There are guys in our league that can shoot the puck 80-90 miles/hour and im pretty sure it hurts just as bad as an ice puck when it hits you. Have any of you guys ever played a run and gun game in roller. Im guessing not. If you get two good teams in a run and gun game it gets some pretty good flow and speed to it. I know i just kinda rambled there so excuse me if its kinda tuff to read. Im just tired of ice players haveing such a big ego and thinking they are so much better than us just cause they play ice.

It's field hockey all the way for me.  Screw this ice and roller crap.

I wear Mission pants. What brand of skirt do you prefer? :P

I can't really give any opinion because there is only a house roller league here, and tomorrow is my first roller game in 4 years, but I just took it really lightly and potted a few goals. I think it definately improves stickhandling though.

I personally haven't played roller hockey in a league so I can't really give a definate opinion. BUT I dont mind going outside on some blades with friends and playing a game its alright, I do like ice way more just well because you can stop.

Because so much roller is played recreationally as an upgraded street game, I can understand some of these impressions, however....that said..there is some pretty good inline hockey played ....in "hockey areas"....like NJ, like Eastern Pa, like California, like St. Louis, like Detroit...sorry if I left out some regions....

Actually New England..specifically the Boston region fields some of the best inline teams in the country...like Team Rink Rat, and the Boston Storm of MLRH..Connecticutt Thunder XIHL/MLRH...

Somone else has mentioned that they do not like roller because "you cannot stop".....sorry to disabuse you of your impressions, but in fact good inline players on the latest wheels and floors can stop pretty much like ice hockey players...like any other sport...do not judge it by your own inability to play it....there are plenty of great hockey players from the inline version of the game too.

And for "yglod" who claims better bearings will automatically improve your hockey skills, give me a break...look at all the posts in "ice hockey equipment" about blade problems and chassis problems..... This kind of small minded distain of a valid version of the sport of hockey may simply be where the author cannot be competitive and needs to blame it on equipment, and this type of attitude hurts the whole sport of hockey. In the warmer climates where only expensive artificial ice is available to play ice hockey, roller/inline hockey is the pond hockey where people can become familiar with, and enjoy the sport.....putting it down simply denegrates the whole sport and keeps it from growing in those regions.....

i just dont like the fact that people are comparing ice hockey to roller, they are two different worlds, only similarity is putting puck in net, but the way the game is played isn't hockey IMO

and the bearing issue, when playing in past i found it to be true, i dont play roller anymore so i apologize for that reasoning, i also figured common physics would apply but im sorry, but i do not tak eback how ice is better than roller

The argument about upgrading your bearings and wheels being that big of an advantage is on par with getting custom hollow and radius work on an ice blade done. As far as how good the play is from ice to inline:

[the]Colorado College Squad is prime example. The Tigers spent a good portion of the 2002-2003 season ranked atop the American Hockey Magazine/USA Today College Hockey Poll, and they did it with a number of players who cut their hockey teeth on inline skates, including Brett Sterling and Noah Clarke. Clarke was named a first team All-American and recently signed with the Los Angeles Kings, while Sterling set rookie marks for goals in the CC Black and Gold."

American Hockey Magazine

June/July, 2003

“Look at [inline] players coming out of the so-called non-hockey hotbeds, like Arizona and California –the kids we’re getting from there are darn good players.†... "There is absolutely an overlap in fundamentals.. that is way it can really help ice hockey players."

George Gwozdecky, coach, U. of Denver ice hockey

I truly believe that it is still an apples to oranges comparison, simply because inline does not have the lineage to compete with ice on a popularity level. Inline hockey as it is today has been around less than two decades, whereas ice has been around for at least a century as we know the game today.

When you are talking about the Tigers..do not forget Lee Sweatt....an alumni of the USA Inline Junior development program, and also a memeber of the 2004 USA Hockey Inline Mens National Team(current World Cup Gold medal winners)...He plays defence for the Tigers..who I believe were ranked #1 for much of the 2004/2005 season as well before losing to Denver.

For those who think inline is "second rate hockey" I challenge you to get to watch the World Championships when they come around, or the World Cup play...I have read multiple comments from dedicated ice hockey fans about "some of the best hockey they have ever watched..ice or roller" from previously skeptical viewers who got to see some of the play in Kitchener Ont. last summer.

Now I am not talking about the play between say Mexico or Argentina, Greece, or Brazil....who are still developing their programs, but the games between the Czech Rep., France, Italy, Switzerland, Denmark, Canada, and the US.....provide tremendous hockey entertainment for anyone who loves the sport, and gives anyone who can attend, a chance to catch the zenith of competition between the worlds best inline players.

Can't we all just get along? Some people enjoy ice, some roller. Others like both equally. As was stated before, they both have their ups and downs. It all boils down to what the individual likes playing.

A lot of people across the country show no respect for roller hockey. Some of the top ice hockey players in the country right now, Tj Hensick (University of Michigan), Gabe Gautheir (University of Denver), Bobby Ryan (OHL, Owen Sound Attack) are all ROLLER HOCKEY PLAYERS. To me boths sports are fun to watch, just don't bash roller hockey because all you have seen is an in house league. Top Notch roller hockey is very fun and creative. If you can't skate in roller hockey don't bother playing a high pace game. In Ice hockey you can definately hide out more if you can't skate as good. If you are big and nasty you can play ice hockey, you can't get away with that in roller hockey.
