Equipment Disinfecting Sprays?

Recommended Posts

Anyone have any suggestions or home made sprays? I skate frequently and have my skates on for a few hours sometimes. I try to dry them when I can, but I don't always have the ability. Anyways, they are starting to smell bad and I want to get rid of the bacteria/minimize it before it gets worse. Any suggestions? I need something potent, but safe. Bleach apparently will discolor my liners, so I don't think I can use that. Would dousing them in Lysol a few times and allow them to dry help? What about ammonia diluted?

Many here including myself have been using an alcohol / water mix for the spray bottle. I also hang my skates and run the fan overnight in front of all my gear.

wintergreen alcohol mixed with hydrogen peroxide (about a 50/50 mix) - mix them in a bottle you can't see through (like a bigger brown peroxide bottle) and screw on a spray nozzle (I used one from an old windex bottle).

I use the 50/50 wintergreen alcohol and hydrogen peroxide mix like althoma1. Does a good job on the smell, but on lighter materials (like the inside of my elbow pads) it can give them a very light greenish hue. Not a big deal to me at all, but wanted to mention it.

Rosemary oil in warm water (15 drops of oil to 24 oz of water). Smells like menthol when you first spray it, but when it dries it smells like nothing. It's done a great job for the 4 or so months I've been using it.

I use straight up white vinegar. Super cheap, and doesn't dry out my glove palms, in fact, it seems to make them softer.

Thanks JR, I'll have to give that a try. I bought a product at WalMart called "OdoBan". It worked really well. Skates don't smell rank anymore and have a slight powdery scent. I sprayed them down thoroughly the first application and then dried them in front of a fan. That got rid of most of it. Then I've been spraying them lightly after everytime I skate. I've done it 3 times now and the odor is almost completely gone.

Want to chime in about undergarments. If you use the new materials it will help absorb some of your stink.

I used to wash the gear w/ Tide sport and add baking soda and vinegar, but I recently got a bottle of this for $2 at Mashalls.

It works great, no stink whatsoever. Sometimes I still add baking soda and vinegar other times I don't, it just works very well.
