As a bigger guy I have always found that the oldschool Pro stock Jofa/RBK models have been fantastic. You can still find them on Ebay in size 14-18. -
Yes, still dealing with it. The skin wound is almost completely gone but the skin is still very tender. So frustrating considering how close I was to a full recovery. Happy to hear that you're doing well though.

Wow, I have had absolutely no issues with my hardware. It seems to have set in very well. I don't even snap and pop anymore. I feel that I would have been completely recovered had it not been for the 2nd degree burn. I am slowly recovering from this using a prescription cream called Silver Sulfadiazine SSD and being on antibiotics. It's continuing to drain from the bubble that developed and the swelling is once again dissipating a bit more each day. I worry now that I will have to wait for the skin to fully recover from the burn before I can put a boot on and attempt to skate. Thankfully I can do most anything else that my ROM allows due to the swelling.

Yeah the foot strength will come back eventually. It came back for me the more I walked. I noticed a really big difference when I began walking hills and then moved up to walking hills on my toes and then my heels in 2 minute intervals. I agree with you about simply starting back slow and playing once a week if you can do that. That's my plan other than some stick and puck or even open skate until I have full strength and ROM again. The Shock Doc ankle ice pack isn't as intense as the Ortho pillow sized cold pad.

Great news about your progress. 10 days ago I went and saw my friend with my previous Supremes. after my PT progress was off the charts and I was doing fast and long lateral jumps as well as vertical jumps. He evaluated my ankle and the swelling I still had. He then heated my boot around the side of the ankle to the eyelets. when it was warm enough he rounded it out, so it wrapped rather than squeezed. I put the skate on, tied it tight and stood there for a few minutes. I then walked in them with no pain. We stuck them in the freezer for about 45 minutes, I put them back on and skated 10 laps pain free. Talk about a win for me. Well not so fast. later that night I went home and wrapped my pillow sized ice pad (in a pillow case) around my ankle and fell asleep with it on. Woke up about an hour later and my ankle was good and numb. I went to bed thinking no big deal. Only to find out the next morning my ankle was killing me. I had gotten Cold Pack burn on my ankle. Having the plate inside only magnified the effects and made it that much worse. So I'm now dealing with the skin on my leg and around my ankle red as a tomato, burning and itching beyond belief while being swollen and limiting me to do little to rehab it.

Same: I was told by my doc that the displacement was enough that I would have long term issues with arthritis and other joint issues if I didn't have surgery. I'm happy to say I have the ability to skate on a couple different rinks at any time. Its just a matter of getting past the pain of the incision point and where it meets my boot. The incision is still fairly fresh and I have a good amount of swelling in the top of my foot. Just have to keep on the road to recovery and moving forward. I'm now skipping at a good pace and should be running in a week or so. Deep Squats, leg presses and all other leg exercises are a breeze. The only thing holding me back is the pain in that area. It is great to hear about others progress and success stories. Very motivating

37.... HAHA! I miss those days. I'm 45 and seem to be recovering well. I'll have my skate punched out before I have another surgery to remove my plate and screws. I figure at my rate of recovery I should be ok. I guess only time will tell though.

Its actually for both scar tissue and mostly the fascia that surrounds the muscles. In short the muscle cant grow or expand without the fascia doing the same. So by doing this it stretches and loosens up the fascia around the muscle helping better circulation, oxygen and nutrient rich blood causing faster recovery, growth and stimulation to the muscle. A lot of pro athletes are now incorporating this into their routines.

Way to go man! Happy to see you on skates. I'm going to give it a try again myself this weekend. I saw above that the PT did perform Graston (the metal piece) treatment on you. I have found this to work great.

Sounds like the PT was using the same ice pad I have however I just put it in a pillowcase and wrap it around my foot. Works great everywhere except the top of my foot where I really wanted it. The Shock Doc. wrap worked very well. Hits the front of my ankle right where I want it. I put it in a plastic bag then throw it in the freezer. Being that you have no incision I would suggest you try the Graston Therapy. My PT can perform this everywhere other than where my incision is at this time. I'm going to request an ultrasound tomorrow. A friend of mine said this really helps. I'm also going to ask for a script of Voltaren gel. The stuff is great for inflammation.

Yes that's the one. How do you like it? I'm still waiting for the packs to finish freezing. I have no intention of taking it out. The surgeon said I would be able to skate again without pain. But he told me within 5 months when we first spoke. I'm sure its just a matter of waiting for the tenderness and incision to completely heal.

I wanted to update you on my progress. Tomorrow will be 11 weeks since my injury and Monday will be 10 weeks since my surgery. I went to stick and puck today to test out my ankle. I wasn't expecting much other than to gauge my pain and progress. I put my boot on with some extra padding in the area of my incision and a compression sock in hopes that it would help reduce any friction or pain from the tightening of the boot at that point. It did not. I decided to suck it up and go out on the ice thinking that maybe the padding in the boot would warm up and lesson the pain,. It did not. I was only able to be on the ice, skating at a slow to moderate pace for 15 minutes. I did not attempt to push off aggressively nor try to power stop. I now know for sure that I need more time for the flesh in the area of the incision and plate in my ankle to heal a bit more and for the swelling to go down. So for now, Ice and Motrin are on the menu for the night. I want to add that I'm excited to try out a new ice pack later tonight that I came across on TH but purchased at a local retailer due to having an adult size and being able to get it today. Its the Shock Doctor Ice Recovery Ankle Wrap. This has a 360 compression ice wrap that you can Velcro tightly, rather than the pillow sized ice pad I was wrapping around my leg that I had from my shoulder surgery. The large ice pad I was using seemed to only work where it was tightest and not around the entire ankle as needed.

Optimus is right. The recovery time does vary from one to another. I went to my third PT session today and have come a long way even since my first visit a week ago today. I'm now doing single leg calf raises and Airex mat (blue pad) balancing. I'm going out to skate for open session tomorrow afternoon. We'll see how that goes. However my swelling is still very similar to yours. Most all of it in the front part of my tongue limiting my range of motion. So when all is said and done I will be on skate a day under 11 weeks since the injury and 10 weeks since the surgery. BTW; If you have someone trained in Graston therapy at your PT office ask them to do it. Its not comfortable at all but gets better each session and helps loosen everything up. www.grastontechnique.com

That's great news. Yeah the Motrin will also help with the inflammation as well as the pain. Funny how people don't associate the two.

Happy for you man. Yes you will have to be proactive in pointing your foot forward and retraining yourself to walk like you did before the accident. One day at a time brother. Remember, muscle fatigue pain is far different and BETTER than actual injury pain. Its a sign of progress and that's what you're doing brother; Progressing!

Thanks for the feedback puck it. I always hope for the best and prepare for the worst. I truly believe my recovery will go well. I have great faith in the docs at my ortho office after they helped me through a terrible groin injury a few years ago. Optimus, i agree with Puck it. Don't let this get you down. Keep pushing and doing what the docs tell you. Never hurts to get a second opinion if you're not happy. remember that we are all different and recover at a different rate. I PM'd you the other day.

Optimus, I had a similar accident back on June 12th. A dirty boarding hit from behind. Broke my fibula and separated the tibia from the ankle. I had surgery on June 20th. a plate and 8 screws put in. Sent the pics to JR. its no joke. Was cleared on Monday to be out of my boot (woo hoo) and walking in a shoe. I still have extreme swelling that will eventually go away. For now its causing a lack of ROM. Thankfully I have no pain. I slept in my boot every night until I was cleared on Monday. It sucked but it helped. I still ice it twice a day. I can stand/balance all my weight on it. I've been doing fore/aft ROM exercises with it using a theraband. nothing crazy but just to stretch. I can say that the dr. was surprised with the speed of my recovery and healing progress. I attribute it to being in shape, eating well and getting a lot of sleep. Dr. said that I should be back on skates in Nov. I think that's realistic at this point. I look at as the ice and my gear aren't going anywhere. Just take it easy and hang in there. I must add that I begin PT next week and that should help my progress even more. I do tend to feel a sharp pain now and again in the area where the plate is. I can only guess its from the plate rubbing against scar tissue. Never the less, things happen like car accidents. Fix the car and get back on the road.

Thanks again for the quick reply to my email and for posting this. I hope it helps those who may have had the same thought or question. I just sent your link to a friend of mine who's 8 year old is showing great potential of becoming something amazing. I'm curious to see what his skating coach will think of these.

I ordered some of these today. It will be a while before I'm able to try them but I'm convinced that they will work great from all the feedback. I am curious. Are these similar to the Toe Glove that was in the Kor Shift 2 skates?

I think the best thing is that you can always you the trusted Sharpie to color over any blue you don't like. I know I did that for years with my Supremes. Would be cool if Bauer sold a black pen similar to Sharpie that did this.
